5.0 out of 5 stars a Zen Tone review, July 4, 2003

This review is from: Sinner/Songwriter (Audio CD)
The first thing you must ask yourself is ' Why don't I have a Patrick Brayer CD ?' With over 42 volumes of work, this is the Inland Empire's best kept secret. With songs covered by Alison Krauss, Stuart Duncan, and X's John Doe to name a few, it is Brayer's first official release with Aim records. Claimed by famed Michael Hedges to be the 'Father of Catholic & Western', Sinner Songwriter is a loose collection of some of Brayer's best work. Highlights include 'The Man who Embalmed Hank Williams', a song about a chance meeting with a man in a swampy Alabama bar who claims to have embalmed the Crown of Country & Western music, '1,2,3 Forever's door', a multi track song with all the tone a master could want, 'High heels sinking in the sand', a dark country banjo ballad, and numerous other tracks, none of which slack in their ability to grab you.
This album is a must have for the serious collector. Once you start listening to The Secret Hits you will be hooked. Brayer is the Chief Vizier of Tone. A dark country folk artist who takes the words around you and spins them into a lyrical web from which you will not escape. To quote an interview with Ben Harper :

Performing Songwriter: Your initial release, Volume Nine: Catholic and Western Fabuli, is by Patrick Brayer, who was a mentor to you for several years, right?

Harper: Absolutely! Patrick Brayer is one of the most prolific, eloquent songwriters around. The world will know him one day, and I'll be glad to have played a small role in it. I mean, his songs have been covered by Alison Krauss and Stuart Duncan, so its coming.
