Book Description

December 1, 2002
When Martin Fante walks into a lesbian bar in the seediest part of San Francisco desperately looking for his aloof yet alluring girlfriend, we know all is not well. But something much deeper drives Martin, a secret that begins to surface as he cares for his dying mother. Martin's torment--for years buried beneath a string of sexual liaisons, an irreverent lifestyle, and a career as a radio news reporter-can no longer be ignored. As his mother's health and his relationship with his girlfriend degenerate, that dark secret threatens to bury Martin instead.

Scott Lettieri writes knowingly, with precise and sometimes outraged compassion about Martin's struggle, a journey that takes the reader through the back streets of San Francisco, L.A., and Martin's psyche. Through flashbacks of Martin's childhood, we learn what drives the adult Martin Fante, what makes him stay in an abusive relationship, what ties him to the violence he yearns to escape. The result is a novel that allows the reader to experience how even death can serve the love that makes life worth living.

Lettieri writes with grace and authority. I couldn't put it down!
Sinner's Paradise is a profound, disturbing and beautifully crafted novel. Powerfully sensual yet brittle and real, transports us to the seamier side of the psyche. Enjoy the ride; it's a wild one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and Real, April 3, 2003

I read this book in two sittings. Would have finished it in one, but I had to go to work. The characters are real and the dialogue/discriptions ring true. Lots of novelists use San Francisco as a backdrop, but few get it down this well. A great first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Triumphantly Raw, January 7, 2003
By
Chelsea (San Francisco, ca USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sinner's Paradise (Paperback)
I haven't read a compeling book like this in years! It is beautifully scripted, with so many complicated twists and turns that you cannot put the book down. The story is raw and it not only rubs you, it grates you in ways that you didn't know you even liked. Its a look at the person that is within us all and the complications that have brought us to be. This book challenges the senses on every page with its knarled and tangled story of love, hate, compassion, obsession and in the end peace and healing. Its biggest triumph is staying true to its roughness and realistic in its story.
