4.0 out of 5 stars A fun action packed novella

This was a nice quick read, and with all quick reads I dont expect to be blown away.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun action packed novella, August 30, 2010

This is the short prequel to the Otherkin trilogy novels of which Sins of the Heart is currently available and the other two Sins of the Soul (Hqn) and Sins of the Flesh (Hqn) will be coming along soon.

Sin's Daughter starts off with action and pretty much stays in that mode the whole way through. As a short novel it works pretty well with some good character development and interesting mythology. Amber works as a character because she's just as confused as you (the reader) are about what she is and who is after her. There is really no exposition on why Kai made the choice he made to do what he's doing - and that's a drawback albeit a minor one. There is some suspension of disbelief but this is fantasy so I expected that. I wish there had been maybe 5 more pages of flashback though as I feel it could have enriched it measurably.

I have not yet started the regular novels in the series so I'm not exactly sure this gave me a really good set up for it although it does introduce the Underworld. As a stand alone it reads very similar to an anthology story and is about the same quality I usually find in them - perhaps a bit higher than a standard 3 star average. What really made this stand out more was the action scenes and the tension created - it's hard to do that with a short novel but the author pulls it off. Overall I liked it and am looking forward to reading the series. Just remember again that this a SHORT novella prequel and so not as fleshed out as a regular novel. It is complete as it is - unlike some anthology collections I've read you don't get a "to be continued" at the end. This is worth at least a star to me since I get so irritated when authors do that!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Short story SHOULD be!, August 30, 2010

This review is from: Sin's Daughter (Otherkin) (Kindle Edition)
Recently with e-books I have noticed an annoying trend with many so called a "short stories" - that being, that they are really more of a stray idea that could be a short story if it really really tried hard. Like the author had an idea for a short story, jotted it down, and some how managed to publish it as a short story. I am glad to report that this is NOT one of those short stories, and that this story actually reaffirmed my faith that some authors still respect their readers enough not to try and rip them off by passing off their random mussings as a true short story. Gee, remember when when "short stories" were really the length of what they now call novellas? Yeah, I'm digressing, so I'll get down off my soap box and start the reivew.

This story was so worth the $, and is a great pre-quel to the Otherkin Triology by Eve Silver. I actually read "Sins of the Heart" (bk 1) first, and still thought it was worth going back to read the pre-quel. The characters and plot development were well thought out, intriguing, and gave a great introduction to the "Otherkin world". I really enjoyed the characters and the story very much and didn't want to put it down. I won't expain the plot bc that is what the book blurb is for, but suffice to say, it is a story worth reading.

Before this series, I had not had the pleasure of reading Eve Silver's writing, but I have "favorited" her homepage and plan to keep up with this series and maybe a few of her others too. Thank you, Ms. Silver, for giving us an ENTIRE story to read. The fact that many authors no longer feel it is necessary to do that is truly sad. If anyone else has experienced this, remember you have 7 days to return an ebook for a full refund (and complain). Apparantly they get a lot of complaints about this issue, as they should, and hopefully refunded books with complaints will send a message to those writers.

However, THIS short story is a definate KEEPER and THIS author is definately one to read and continue to follow! Looking fwd to the otherkin series Sins of the Soul (book 2) release (Sept. 1, 2010) and Sins of the Flesh (book 3) to be released October 1st, 2010! Wow, I can't believe they aren't making us wait a year between books - amazing!

PJVs QUICKIE POV: An action-packed novella that had me engrossed and wanting to read Silver's Otherkin series.

REVIEW: Amber Hale doesn't know what she is, or who she is running from - only that when the hunters come - RUN!

She let herself get close to someone, once and has regretted it ever since, betrayed to the hunters she fled and her lover was killed. It has been 50 years and she still hadn't gotten over him, even though she knows he gave her up to the people that hunt her.

When the hunters again come for her, she realizes she has made a huge error in returning to San Fransisco. But, just as the men are closing in on her a man destroys them - and reaps their souls - and that man is her dead lover, Kai.

A short and fast-paced read that introduces you to the Otherkin series. It definitely wets the palate for more, even though it is rather rushed.

RECOMMENDATIONS: This is a paranormal romance and for 18+. Fans of series by authors like Jeaniene Frost, Karen Chance and Patricia Briggs should enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short story, interesting beginning..., October 30, 2010

This was a free Kindle download - a prequel to a series I haven't read yet. I usually don't enjoy short stories because I find that they're just not developed well enough plot-wise, with shallow characterization. But this author did a good job with this one. She was able to flesh out the characters, provide back-story, and make me care about what happened - all within a very short wordcount. A great beginning. I may just check out the rest. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT LITTLE READ, October 27, 2010

This story is what it is, a 900 page, Kindle book that is a prequel to the Otherkin series. Go in to SIN'S DAUGHTER with that in mind and its very very nice read. Kai Warin and Amber Hale, a couple in love that right off the bat, Kai dies and blames her. Switch fifty years later and they reunite, read the story. I am waiting to try the first book in the series, SINS OF THE HEART. This is another book that Kindle pulled me into, free! HIGHLY RECOMMEND KINDLE and this littel story, leaves you wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sin's Daughter, November 28, 2010

(from Murphy's Library - [...])

Sin's Daughter is a short prequel of the Otherkin series--but you can read it before, during or after reading the series, it doesn't make any difference, once there's no big spoilers of the series on this 8 chapters story (reason why I didn't post the `attention' warning at the beginning of this post). We get to see a little bit of Kai on Sins of the Flesh, but we would never ever imagine what happened to him if it wasn't for Sin's Daughter.

On this book we meet Kai and Amber. They were a couple until Kai was murdered. He believes Amber was the one who sent him to death--and she believes he was the one who sent her right to the hands of her enemy. Years later, what happens when they see each other again?

Since I read Sins of the Heart, I was curious to see the point of view from someone who isn't a Sutekh son but is a Soul Reaper, so I really enjoyed reading this book. Silver's writing hooked me up with the action scenes and the alternate points of view. She knows how to balance the story and how to make us curious about what's coming up.

This was a nice quick read, and with all quick reads I dont expect to be blown away.

Honestly, I wasnt blown away nor was I entirely satisfied with this read.

I felt that the story fell short. The author exchanged action for character- there's plent of action, but I dont feel there was enough character growth or depth. Im big on characters, not so much the action. The main characters felt a bit flat, basic fantasy, cookie cutter standard. The villians were about the same, very cookie cutter. Nothing was explained too well in great detail, but kept to just the basics of the book's universe.

The romance in the novel was minimal. You had your sex scene and the stolen kiss, the awkward lover moments, but again I felt those situations were kinda just put there, not that they happened.

Besides the lack of character growth and explinations, the story was a great quick read, something to occupy me as I waited for the buss. I will be purchasing the rest of the series because Im hoping to get a better glimpse and understanding of the Otherkin universe because it looks like alot of fun to read about.

I'd never read any of Eve Silver's books until I saw this in Kindle for free and thought "what the heck, I'll try it". I am so glad I did! Ms. Silver definitely created a devoted follower in me. Sin's daughter is a prequel to Sin's of the Heart the start of the Otherkin Series. Keep in mind: This is a short story/novella to whet your appetite for the series!

Amber Hale knows she's different--who else wakes up after being killed and heals from deadly wounds in a matter of hours? Her mother, gone now, always told her to run from those that 'hunted' her but would never tell her why they were hunting her. Amber's immortal and she's on the run, isolated and scared. The one time she let down her guard she was betrayed--or so she thought.

Kai Warin, Ambers one time lover and only trusted friend, is back but his version of past events are a bit different than hers. Now a soul reaper they find themselves working together to fend off whatever is hunting them both.

This story promises romance, adventure and interesting mythology it's a great urban fantasy with a twist on the genre that grabs the attention and keeps it.

Was fun, good characters, except story ended very quickly, almost suddenly and you're left a bit unsatisfied. Almost makes it questionable whether it is worth reading.
