Book Description

January 3, 2012
The homicide beat in Louisiana isn't just terrifying, it's demonic. Detective Kara Gilligan of the supernatural task force has the ability to summon demons to her aid, but she herself is pledged to serve a demonic lord. And now, people who've hurt Kara in the past are dropping dead for no apparent reason. To clear her name and save both the demon and human worlds, she's in a race against the clock and in a battle for her life that just may take her to hell and back.

About the Author

Diana Rowland has lived her entire life below the Mason-Dixon line. She has worked as a bartender, a blackjack dealer, a pit boss, a street cop, a detective, a computer forensics specialist, a crime scene investigator, and a morgue assistant, which means that she's seen more than her share of what humans can do to each other and to themselves. She won the marksmanship award in her Police Academy class, has a black belt in Hapkido, and has handled numerous dead bodies in various states of decomposition. She presently lives in southern Louisiana with her husband and her daughter where she is deeply grateful for the existence of air conditioning. A master of urban fantasy, she’s the author of the Demon series and the White Trash Zombie series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh come on....you're kidding....right? January 10, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this book. Not because it isn't well written, because it is. Or because the author was just going through the motions plot wise (which sometimes seems to happen in series...it's like they run out of fresh ideas but keep on writing because they want to cash in). No, good story...good writing... really well done. So why three stars? Because this story ends with such a cliff hanger, and this author seems to take a year or so between installments. It's not fair, really, when so little gets resolved that you're left wanting more than you should. It's like getting a drink of something that leaves you thirstier than you were before. Great for the author...but what about the reader? Personally, I feel a bit ripped off...for my $ 7.99 I want to be left feeling like I got an entire story...not just enough to pave the way for the next book. I suggest that Ms. Rowland look at the series by authors such as Patricia Briggs or Ilona Andrews...great series...that leave you wondering what's going to happen next...BUT not wishing you hadn't purchased the book until the next one is out. In my opinion, this book is more like a half story, rather than a whole story. And the odd thing is, it didn't have to be that way....leave off such severe cliff hangers...please!

MY NEW RECOMMENDATION GET THIS BOOK NOW SO YOU CAN GET RIGHT INTO BOOK #5 IN DEC. (uh, it is October so depending on your reading speed, might want to start reading)
It was a great story and loved the plots and subplots but I HATE CLIFFHANGER ENDINGS!!!!!!!!! Took a book I would have rated 5 stars and made it 4 stars at best with the ending that sux. I have read all the books and consider this a real kick in the teeth to the readers not only because of the ending but the next book (I am told) is at least a year away. In my case with about a hundred(s) of books read each year I never consider it a good plan to leave leave your readers in the lurch for a year. It sux bad enough on TV when you have to wait a week but to have one of your favorite series do it to you and then leave you hanging for a full year is just a really bad idea and makes me wonder if I should trim my reading list down by one series (not a chance but that's how mad it made me). If there was a release coming in 3-4 months I could handle it but this smacks of abuse of the readers IMHO (and I know there are many who will not feel that way) but that's how I feel, it was a great book as all the others in this series are but I purchase books for my own selfish entertainment and not to add to my frustration level. It could have been done much better, this make me feel like they are holding a carrot out to make me buy the next book and I tend to rebel against such heavy handed tactics by anyone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next title. January 10, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book ends with a cliffhanger and does not have a complete story behind it. The book is well written but it is like any cliffhanger in a book leaving it with a feeling of half finished. I would advise you to wait until the next book comes out before buying and reading this one. Good luck finding good literature.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Installment January 3, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Kara has had a lot thrown at her in the past year, but she's learning to cope with it the best that she can, especially the heavy demonic influences, with her ties to the demonic lord, and her demon protector/roommate. Even worse, someone keeps trying to summon her to the demonic realm, a fate she wishes to avoid at all costs. Then things get even trickier when her latest case becomes the first of many mysterious deaths with one thing in common. Kara has reason to hate them all, putting her front and center in suspicion. What the rest of the police force doesn't know is that they deaths are linked by another thing, the Arcane. In between demonic attacks and summoning attempts, she'll have to get to the bottom of things fast before her time runs out.

It really amazes me how much Kara has grown over the books. Granted, it has been a while since I read the first couple of installments, but I remember her as being very closed off from everyone else, and more than a little meek and mild. Now she has her network of close friends that are in on her secret, as well as her close ties to a few demons, and the demonic lord. It is amazing how much stronger she is now that she has learned to trust others, as it in turn helped her gain confidence in herself, not only in her Arcane skills, but also in physical fights as well. It seems all those training sessions with Eilahn are really paying off, and I can only see her getting stronger. I know I wouldn't want to get on her bad side.

As I was preparing to write this, I looked back over my review of Secrets of the Demon. I had talked about the somewhat love triangle between Kara, Ryan, and Rhyzkahl, and how I was starting to get frustrated with Ryan.
