4.0 out of 5 stars This should be a script for a NEW Buffy movie
This book was very well written. It was good to see that Christopher Golden brought parts of the original movie into the book. A face from Buffy's past enters back into Buffy's life unexpectedly. Her old flame from Los Angles. Pike( who was played by Luke Perry in the movie). This puts Buffy's love life into a spin when she has to decide which man she loves most, Angel...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sins of the Father
As Buffy books go, this one was pretty good. It's focus was mainly on Giles, who faced a tough challenge, so if you enjoy reading about him, this would be a good book. There was also a good storyline with a focus on Buffy and Angel, so if you are like me and love reading about their relationship, then this is a good story for you

This book was very well written. It was good to see that Christopher Golden brought parts of the original movie into the book. A face from Buffy's past enters back into Buffy's life unexpectedly. Her old flame from Los Angles. Pike( who was played by Luke Perry in the movie). This puts Buffy's love life into a spin when she has to decide which man she loves most, Angel or Pike. Pike's coming to Sunnydale was not personal, he needed Buffy's help to destroy a Stone Demon that he got really mad. All this and the usual magick from Willow, quiet coolness from Oz, fighting between Xander and Cordy, and the usual British remarks from Giles makes for some really good reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book...can't wait to see it live!!, February 27, 2001
This review is from: Sins of the Father (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
Having seen the original movie and then wondering where Pike went when the show debuted, I was pleased to pick up and read this book. Not only did it answer my questions, it also made me smile, cry and laugh.

Unlike the on screen romance with clueless TA/Army comando Riley Finn, the Buffy in this book is torn between two men who genuinely understand her calling and do not try to make light of it. Thus, Buffy's decision is really interesting (especially when we learn that Pike and Angel can actually stand to be around each other)

Sure, some people have panned the book, claiming that it deals too much with Giles and the relationship between his father, but in actuality, one can skip over those parts and not miss too much in the book. This book is an essential for all BTVS fans who want our heroine to actually be placed in an emotionally realistic love triangle.

Like many other Buffy fans, I believe this would be a wonderful script for a badly-needed second movie and should seriously be considered. Even if there are no specifics mentioned for the role of Pike, physical and character descriptions make it clear that Golden wants no other than Luke Perry (who was the original Pike) to reprise the role. Because his presence was ironically one of the reasons why I went to see the 1992 movie, I would certainly not have any problems with that.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this book down!, December 12, 1999

I loved this book so much! It is really exciting! If you are a fan of Buffy and Angel as a couple (which I am) you will begin to hate Pike (which I did) and really want him to leave. Angel is great in this book, he is really understanding. I actually cried in parts! If you love Buffy, you will really love this book! I totally recommend it! (And I am really picky about books, if it isn't good, I stop reading, but it definitly wasn't the case with Sins of the Father!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Golden winner., September 1, 2000

I have been rereading some of my favorite Buffy books. Sins of the Father ranks right up there on the top of my list. Christopher Golden has a real talent for developing these characters. While Giles faces his most difficult foe, Buffy must fight demons both real and personal. Her old friend Pike returns. Angel wonders if he should step aside and let Buffy experience love with a human. Its a wonderful triangle of lovers old and new. The action of course is gripping. I enjoyed this even more with the second reading. I recommend this to all Buffy fans.

This book is the first book I've read from the Buffy novels and I was quite impressed. I felt as if I was actually watching the show. I read the book in one night so that should give you a hint that the book was a page turner! It was great to see Pike brought back from the movie version several years ago and inserting him into Buffy's current lifestyle and situation was written in perfection. I really disliked Pike from the film, but thanks to the book, I have a whole new appreciation for him. All Buffy fans should read this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally...., March 5, 2000
This review is from: Sins of the Father (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
This further proves my point that Christopher Golden (and Nancy Holder) is the best author for Buffy books. Although this book dragged at parts (what 300+ page book doesn't?), it was the bright sun rays from a wonderful author onto a dull and gray landscape of deprived and starving Buffy fanatics wanting a good book. Sins of the Father focused a lot on Giles and Angel, which was a good and welcomed switch. I watched the original 1992 Buffy movie, and Pike was off character, but since he isn't a normal Buffy show character, we can let that one go. The final parts of the book were highly suspensful and I was eagerly reading, wishing my eyes and brain could process the words faster. I won't give anything away with this one. It is truly a Buffy masterpiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars Demons from the Past, January 4, 2010
This review is from: Sins of the Father (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
Set in an alternate season three, SINS OF THE FATHER features two interesting, although slightly competitive, plots. The first one has Pike (featured in the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the comic, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus, Vol. 1) coming to town for Buffy's help with a stone demon, while the second deals with Giles and his past. Obviously demons of all kinds are the theme of the book.

This is my first foray into the Buffy novels and I have to say it was a pretty good one to start with. The characterizations were well-done, most notably Willow and Xander (I could just hear their dialogue and see their expressions), with the exceptions of Cordy, who sounded like herself about half the time, and Giles, who just seemed off somehow. The plot moves well enough along and the action was well-written. I especially liked their new vampire equipment that you can't help but think, "Why didn't anyone come up with this before?" The banter was great and definitely had the feel of the show, it made me laugh quite a few times. The only thing I had a problem with was Buffy's indecision about Pike and Angel. While I get the part about Pike being a 'normal' guy who knows that she fights paranormal crime and isn't put off, but why does she have such strong feelings for him still? It's been two, two-and-a-half years since she even saw him, I just don't see it. Also, the 'impossible love' between Buffy and Angel was redundant. If anyone has ever seen the show (and how many are going to read the books if they aren't a fan?), they already know all the angsty melodrama on the subject. One remark on the subject was all we needed, not repeatedly using just about the same two phrases a million times. With those two quibbles said, this was an entertaining book that took me back to my favorite time of the show, the high school years.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, August 6, 2007
This review is from: Sins of the Father (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book; it's probably one of my favorite Buffy books. I really enjoyed the introduction of new characters and I really like how Pike was brought back. The story line developed well and the dialogue was excellent. I felt as if I were watching an episodeo of the tv show. You must read this book if you are a Buffy fan!

3.0 out of 5 stars Little Disappointments!, September 1, 2005
This review is from: Sins of the Father (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading the back cover of "Sins of the Father" I got totally excited! I thought I'd finally found an actual Angel/Buffy story based on their pre-Angelus relationship. I have gotten really tired with all of the stories of the Buffy/Angel trials post season two. Their relationship just became too predictable. And I thought now with "Sins of the Father" it was going to be different. Christopher Golden came up with the best story/plot line. Pike, Angel. Angel, Pike. Past love meets the Present. Perfect! Think of the conflict. I was looking forward to Angel fighting with Pike for Buffy's love. But no! Of course not! It's based in season three. So if you are an extreme Buffy/Angel fan like me, you can see the disappointment with the entire situation.

All in all I did up finishing the book in a couple hours. I was pretty impressed with the story line and the various conflicts. But I was slightly disappointed with the conclusion of the story.

My final total for: "Sins of the Father" 3 stars. On a personal note, I'd like to take the time and say this to all ;of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer novelists out there : "Please, Please, write a novel based on an adventure with the Scoobies before the gang really finds out about Angel -Angelus curse issue before Buffy and Angel do the naughty-naughty!" Every other Buffy/Angel story just ends up becoming too predictable. Everyone knows how the relationship ends. Thus, the story ends up being a little disappointing. So here's an idea, write a story about Buffy and Angel in some alternate universe. Where somehow Angel's able to get around the circumstances of his curse and be with Buffy. Allowing them to forever fighting the forces of darkness. Or for as long as they shall live. This, in their case may not be particularly long!
