5.0 out of 5 stars Very credible. Well written. VERY HELPFUL with high pollen.
This is VERY IRONIC!!! I just heard the author Debra Bruce on the radio in Atlanta, Georgia this morning. A friend gave me her book three weeks ago and I read it--cover to cover. An interesting and easy read. This was BEFORE tree pollen season hit the South. I used the techniques suggested in the book--the nasal saline irrigation, avoiding iced drinks, avoiding key pollen...

This book had a few good tips - but after dealing with sinus problems for 9 months I had already tried much of what the book suggested. I felt most of the text was dedicated to selling Dr. Grossan's products. I would reccomend checking this out from the library to see its the book's suggestions help but I wouldn't waste any money on it.

With a little digging on reliable web sites you will find just as good, if not better information.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'd smell a rat if I weren't so congested!, July 10, 2007
The one and two star reviews are completely correct when they claim that this book contains a lot of self promotion and that the alleged five star, rave reviews appear to be fake. All but one of the 5 star reviews are written by persons who only review this book, only review books authored or co-authored by Ms. Fulghum, or are by "a reader" with no reviewer information whatsoever. Yes, the authors and publishers SHOULD be ashamed. The book should be able to stand on its own without infomercial-style "help."

I bought this at a book store, only after much internal debate. The book looked like a promotional waste. However, being desperate, I thought it worth the price if only I could get a little information from it. And that is exactly what happened.

As another reviewer has pointed out, much of the information contained is available on the web. I was also surprised that the authors (one of whom claims to be an expert in the field of otolarygology) would only suggest that people who irrigate their sinuses with saline might CHOOSE not to use iodized salt. All of the doctors, literature and web sites that I've encountered STRONGLY CAUTION patients to AVOID iodized, sea or kosher salts for irrigation.

That said, I will admit that there is useful information contained in this volume. Grossan's Hydropulse irrigation system, albeit overpriced, is the best method so far for nasal irrigation and is routinely recommended by other doctors. (It is, of course, quite possible that these others are simply parroting recommendations without real investigation. However, I'm pleased with it.)

The book correctly warns against purchasing nasal solutions with preservatives and discusses chiropractic and acupuncture. The latter two have offered me a measure, although not total, relief. I agree that stress, poor diet and lack of vitamins exacerbate sinusitis. I've yet to try the papain/bromelain enzyme lozenges recommended. Dr. Grossan's web site lists what it describes as a list of clinical trials and refers to published papers in medical journals. I'm going to look these up to see if they actually report positive results.

A definite turn-off is the infomercial style of writing. I'm always eager to read case histories, but, somehow, in this work they don't appear to be authentic. The writing style is often simplistic and has a "canned" feel.

Nevertheless, I'm giving it a 3 star rating for containing useful info, despite it's obvious and rather sleazy devices.

An interesting and easy read. This was BEFORE tree pollen season hit the South. I used the techniques suggested in the book--the nasal saline irrigation, avoiding iced drinks, avoiding key pollen times, and a nasal steroid spray. I changed my medication to a decongestant/antihistamine combo. For the FIRST time in my life--I have MY LIFE. It's super. I'm not a shut-in anymore. Thank you for a very credible book. A must read for ANYONE with sinusitis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sinus Cures by Grossan et al., October 16, 2003
This book defines sinusitis and explains simple and
inexpensive treatment modalities to manage the condition.
Sinus troubles usually commence with inflammation of the
facial cavities around the nose. The sinuses are drawn
to specification. These areas include the frontal, ethmoid and
maxillary sinuses. The author points to a PULSATILE NASAL
IRRIGATOR. This instrument is perfected by getting a WATER PIK
and connecting an irrigator to it. The treatment involves
placing the tip of the water pik in one nostril, bending over the
sink, turning the device on and allowing a saline solution to
pass from one nasal to the next. The process is called
GROSSAN'S PNI . The authors describe potential damage to the
celia of the nose via antihistamines. ice drinks, codeine and
chromium dust just to mention a few. Certain herbal preps
help sinusitis. These are anise, astragalus, bee pollen,
borage oil, echinacea, eucalyptus, garlic, ginger, ginseng,
sage, thyme and pycnogenol. Non-invasive chiropractic,
hand massages and acupuncture are classic treatments which
are known to alleviate the classic symptoms. This book would
be very helpful to the average person having little knowledge
about the sinuses . It is written in simple English.
The information content of the work describes conventional
and alternative medicinal approaches. For this reason alone,
the book is reasonable because it would cost thousands of
dollars to replicate the information contained herein . This work
contains many important diagnostic and treatment details which
you may want to review with the family physician. It is a
worthy addition to any health reference library.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB SINUS REFERENCE, January 26, 2003
By A Customer
This book helped me understand WHY my sinuses continued to get infected--even after staying on horrible antibiotics for weeks. Using the different therapies in this book (keeping mucus thin, avoiding triggers, using saline rinses), I have not had an antibiotic for seven months (a record for me!!). Anyway, easy to read and more importantly--EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND IMPLEMENT!!
I'm just so grateful for this book. Unless you suffer with chronic sinusitis, you have no idea how miserable your life can be. Each chapter detailed more and more self-care steps I could use--and I did!! The many "success" stories of men and women "long-time sufferers of sinusitis" let me know that I could learn to manage this problem. The holistic program helped to put me back in control of my sinus problem--and overall health--and let me finally say GOODBYE to antibiotic therapy, which was nothing more than a bandaid for me. THANK YOU DR. GROSSAN AND DEBRA BRUCE. The book changed my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indepth, scientifically accurate, excellent resource., April 12, 2001

An excellent read for those with allergies and sinusitis. The authors talk about how sinusitis occurs, triggers that may start the miserable chain reaction of congestion, post nasal drip, cough and headache pain, and treatments--ranging from alternative medical therapies to the most effective medicine available. I highly recommend this book. The best of all I've read--and the most down to earth. I read Iker's book and it was too ethereal--never found another that gave really strong science along with practical "how-to"--until this book came along. Good luck. Best book on the topic.
