When we bought our house, there were already hammer arrestors installed on at valves in the laundry room. However, they didn't seem to have any affect. The pipes still banged very loudly when the washing machine was filling. I installed these directly on the supply lines in the basement ceiling (about 4 feet under the valves in the laundry room) and they solved the problem. Case closed!By the way, I'd recommend that you sweat the tee onto the line before screwing in the arrestor. I've read that excessive heat from soldering can destroy the seals inside the piston.

Our new washing machine made it sound like a large Orc was forging armour in the basement. I installed two of these in the laundry room, about 4 inches below each shutoff. They work remarkably well. I can still hear a little "tap tap" downstairs when the machine stops filling, but it is definitely a 98% improvement. Securing the pipe to the basement ceiling should neutralize the remaining little tap sound. It's also comforting to know that the valves in the washing maching aren't being stressed as much, and I don't feel like the plumbing is going to bust apart at the seams.
