Editorial Reviews

Product Description

When it comes to cocktails and appetizers, chef Kathy Casey is an expert at balancing flavors and textures. Sips & Apps has 100 recipes that include not only classics like the Martini and Manhattan but also creative new concoctions like the Douglas Fir Sparkletini and the Blue Thai Mojito. Appetizers include simple finger foods like Roasted Pear Crostini with Gorgonzola and ChaCha Cashews and more substantial treats like Asian Shrimp Cakes with Sweet Chili Sauce. Lots of info on stocking a home bar and plenty of techniques and extras (like a nifty double ribbon marker labeled 'sips' and 'apps') make it easy to match up the right sip with the right app.

2.0 out of 5 stars slips & apps, May 5, 2009
I received a copy of this book, and have paged through it a bit. Thus far, I am not impressed. The idea is good, and some of the appetizers look fairly tasty, but they are not really paired or integrated with the drinks in any meaningful way. As it so happens, this doesn't matter too much, as the drinks are rather uninspired. Time and again, the author bases her drinks around an infused vodka sweetened with syrup when a more interesting liqueur would make for a better drink (e.g. pear vodka instead of Poire Williams, citrus vodka instead of Cointreau, etc.). The drinks tend to profile a single flavor, such as coffee, vanilla, or a particular fruit, and generally don't offer much complexity. The garnishes make for attractive photography, but none of the drinks are anything I am interested in making. I give the book two stars for the appetizers, none for the cocktails.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it - perfect hostess gift!, May 10, 2009
A friend and I recently hosted a "Girl's Getaway weekend" to Sunriver, Oregon. As a hostess gift the girls gave each of us "Sips and Apps". This is a great book to reference for fun cocktails and apps. It will inspire you to make unique creations that you may not normally attempt. It is impossible to choose what recipe to try first, they are all so tempting and proven to be fabulous! The apps are great and fun! All the recipes are super easy to follow and the photography is great I love being able to see what the finished product should look like. I now have a few books on hand for a last minuite hostess gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good refernce for any cocktail occasion, May 8, 2009
This book is a great primer to 'cocktail culture'. The introduction challenges you to step away from premade mixes and make your own, and like any well crafted recipe, to measure. I like the use of all kinds of liquors, making each cocktail idea exciting and affordable. You might like to stock your liquor cabiniet with imports and top shelf selections, there is room to upgrade in every recipe, but for the rest of us, a bottle of pear vodka and a few fresh herbs is a economical inspiration for a backyard brunch. I'll take a Peach 75 at sunset anyday. Sip resposibly.
