P and up
Having read a story about a knight saving a damsel in distress, Cassie is eager to act it out but has trouble convincing her baby sister to be the damsel.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-After reading a story about a brave knight, a brother and sister build a castle in the living room. Cassie wants to be the good knight, but Trevor is unwilling to be the damsel. He finally agrees to be a fierce dragon, but the two argue again when he refuses to be slain. When the baby wakes up from her nap, she joins in the fun, along with the family dog. After a feast prepared by the queen (their mother), the children clean up and Cassie settles down to read another book. The last page shows her dressed as a pirate and ready for action. The vibrant, digital-collage artwork captures the fun of dressing up and playacting. In most illustrations, the children are seen playing in their living room, with the block castle in the background. However, in a few pictures, they appear to be in a real castle, and their mother is always shown wearing a crown and stately robes, which might confuse some readers. Still, this is an appealing look at the resourcefulness of children and the relationship between siblings.

"You be the damsel," Trevor said.

"No way," Cassie said. "It's my idea. You have to be the damsel."

"Then I won't play," Trevor said.

Cassie thought for a minute. Then she said, "All right. You can be a dragon. Dragons are big and fierce. They roar a lot and breathe fire."

"All right," Trevor said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative and shows kids compromising during play, September 6, 2011
By
My kids and I loved this book (ages 4 - 6). The kids in the story were very creative in their play. They had to work out several conflicts about who wanted to act out different characters and managed to do this without making the story seem boring or contrived. Add in a girl who wants to be the hero (not just a damsel in distress) and it's a fun story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read-aloud, December 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sir Cassie to the Rescue (Hardcover)
Since I think the true test of a children's book is reading it aloud to children, I wanted to talk about how well children I've read it to have responded. They know that this is the real imaginative life of children that is being portrayed in a seamless mix of words and pictures. I gave the book to a friend who is a grade one teacher and her children had absolutely no problem understanding that the 'queen' in the pictures and text was really the children's mother. They loved it.
