Editorial Reviews

Australia released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.66:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Alternative Footage, Biographies, Commentary, Interactive Menu, Photo Gallery, Posters, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Trevor Howard is virtually the whole show in Sir Henry at Rawlinson End. He plays an eccentric-to-the-point-of-insanity nobleman whose love affair with the bottle is a long standing source of family embarrassment. Still, when the family mansion is plagued by an unfriendly ghost, Howard finds himself the only one willing or able to exorcise the spirit. Sir Henry at Rawlinson End was based on a radio play by Vivien Stanshall. As such, it is more satisfying for the ear than for the eye. ...Sir Henry at Rawlinson End

This is one wacky movie; a good example of extreme British humour that is c onsidered to be a cult classic & was given "film of the year" award by the N.M.E.. Beautifully shot in B&W mostly at the gothic masterpiece Knebworth House & the gardens there, the plot is difficult to get a handle on--the directors comments on DVD help a lot here. Trevor Howard is brilliant as eccentric lunatic Sir Henry; the anchor of the story which is a right send of the English upper class & their antics; which include plenty of boozing & playing polo. The commentary makes the point that this is a film about words, those of writer vivian stanshall of the Bonzo dog do da band; who makes afew appearances on screen; apparently completely drunk at the time; he was known to down a bottle of vodka before 8 AM. If you like very leftfield British humour, you'll like this film.
