Book Description

April 28, 2003
One of Doyle's favorite novels, set in medieval England beginning in 1348. A young squire, Sir Nigel, wishing to revive his ancestor's traditions vows to perform three noble deeds before claiming the hand of his love. The book is full of adventure, and lots of historical detail, such as the fact that forks had not yet been invented in 1348.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pure delight, July 21, 2008

This book was one of Conan Doyle's personal favorites. Reading it will tell you why. It is full of action, suspense and excitment. The charcters are well devloped and the story is a spell binder. It is good for any age from teens to the advanced years of people like me. It is a prequel to "The White Company" so I recommend you get both books. I guarantee you will enjoy them. It is set in the Fourteenth Century in England and France. The constant warfare between the two powers is the setting for the action, but you need not know much at all about the real history of the time to savor the story. Conan Doyle made an extensive study of the period before writing the two books, so you will learn a good bit about the history and customs time while enjoying a fine story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A return to childhood., November 18, 2008

I last read this book in my early teens, about 50 years ago. I was surprised how much of the book I remembered. It certainly gives a view of 14th century England that is memorable. It also goes a long way to explaining why the French hate the English.

I recommend this book to anyone with children in their early teens who would benefit from an improved vocabulary.
