A bit different,
By knightromance (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Siren Song (Stargate SG-1, No. 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
I've been an SG-1 fan since it's inception way back when, and have read and seen a fair amount of material on the series. This book didn't quite ring true. The plot struggled through, and the ending was not quite right. The biggest issue that I had with this book was the characters. People read SG-1 fanfics to experience the exploits of the SG-1 TEAM, not Samantha Carter and her lackeys. Throughout the majority of the book, Jack, Daniel and Teal'c were portrayed predominantly as weaker than their usual selves (with the occasional spot on moods evoked seemingly more for continuity), while Carter comes across as the strong, stoic leader. While I enjoy stories with a strong female lead (i.e. Tomb Raider, political thrillers, historical thrillers, etc, etc), taking the rest of SG-1 so far out of character to strengthen the role of Samantha Carter just seems OFF. So, a meandering and struggling plot, characterization somewhat off base, and a lackluster ending all add up to the conclusion that I should have listened to my wife (another strong woman) and checked it out from the local library. At least that way you won't feel ripped off in the end.

This review is from: Siren Song (Stargate SG-1, No. 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book takes place sometime after Daniel Jackson has become mortal again and while Jack O'Neill is still a Colonel. At first I loved how this book gave us a new story with bounty hunter Aris Boch...there are so many worlds and story lines in the TV series that never get more than one chance. However, this book is not as well written as others in the series. The action starts out pretty good, but then gets really bogged down in the middle. The ending wraps up without us learning anything concrete about the entire point of the book... what was that technology that put them in so much danger? Was it indeed destroyed? Did Aris Boch's world successfully defeat the Goa'uld and live to see another day? All unanswered questions. I loved that part of the story was from Sam Carter's point of view, but all of the characters were a bit off. The dialog was pretty good, but the thoughts in their heads didn't seem quite right. Overall, I would say that you could skip this one without really missing anything.

There were alot of episodes that were left hanging and the one with Aris Boch was one of them. Why does he need SG1 if he is a 'Great Bounty Hunter'? He puts them in great danger, especially Daniel and it is up to the whole team to not only save themselves but to save Daniel. Great book!
