Book Description

April 22, 2008 0979930502 978-0979930508 1st
Set against the backdrop of the late '60s and early '70s, Nancy Mehagian's delicious memoir tells the tale of a young woman who heeded the siren's call to a life of freedom and romance. A first-generation Armenian American whose family narrowly escaped genocide, the rebellious daughter left behind the safety and security of suburban life for an unforgettable adventure that would find her establishing the first vegetarian restaurant on the Spanish island of Ibiza, having an affair with a Bedouin gypsy during a stint as a cabaret dancer in Syria, and through a series of mishaps, incarcerated for 16 months in a London prison (along with her newborn baby) where she managed, even there, to pioneer a healthy way of eating. A breathtaking, sensual and page-turning chronicle that whisks you along the author's lifelong path to spiritual enrichment, Siren's Feast, An Edible Odyssey, is a story that captures a colorful era and features over 40 recipes as delectable as the journey itself.

More About the Author

A friend once called me the Picasso of the Potato. I'm a first generation Armenian-American whose family narrowly escaped genocide. Leaving the security of suburban life to wander the globe, I established the first vegetarian restaurant in Spain, on the magical island of Ibiza. After a stint dancing cabaret in Syria I spent 16 months incarcerated in an infamous London prison, along with my newborn baby where I managed, even there, to pioneer a healthy way of eating. Of my culinary memoir Siren's Feast, An Edible Odyssey, Quincy Jones said: "A spicy brew of recipes and adventures. I don't know whether to eat this book, smoke it or make love to it." Siren's Feast--part cookbook, large part raucous memoir.

In 1977 I wrote the first vegetarian health food cookbook for kids and am pleased to announce that a new version has just been released, The Supernatural Kids Cookbook. Kid-tested and Mother Earth approved, it is an exciting and innovative collection of healthy, tasty and easy to prepare foods that introduces and encourages mindful eating for junior chefs and contains information about food groups, basic prep, kitchen equipment as well as 70 recipes for snacks and healthy meals the whole family will enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars "LIFE IS EITHER A DARING ADVENTURE, OR NOTHING" May 12, 2008
Format:Paperback
A flower child of the 1960's and 70's Nancy Mehagian lived a life that many might dream of but not many would dare. While amazing and sometimes shocking paths were followed by many flower children, Mehagian blossomed and bloomed like few others. She relates all of this unsparingly in her candid, sometimes gasp producing, often poignant memoir, Siren's Feast. Vegetarian, visionary, vixen? Perhaps. She pens her life adventure to date with grace and winning charm.

Of Armenian descent she grew up in a loving, supportive household where food was highly appreciated and pride taken in their heritage. Mehagian relates that her mother was ordered by a family matriarch not to give birth on Christmas as that was the most important holiday for an Armenian family. Her mother, Florence, obeyed and gave birth on December 26.

"I'm convinced I wanted to spring forth like a grand gift and having been made to wait developed a certain impulsiveness," she writes. "I became the wild child of the family - animated, curious, naughty."

True.

At the age of 14 she began sneaking out at night while her parents slept. Along with friends she would go to ballrooms in South Phoenix and listen to Ray Charles and James Brown. Later, while attending the University of Southern California in 1966 she convinced her parents to send her to Italy, to the University of Florence for a semester. Yes, Italy, via Morocco where she met her first great love, Alejandro, and Achmed who showered her with gifts.

Other stops on her itinerary of farflung spots were Tangier, Sardinia, and Ibiza, where she opened the first vegetarian restaurant. Her travels were marked by the foods she discovered and the friends she made. It was in Syria that she fell in love again, this time with a Bedouin gypsy who fathered her child. Unfortunately her joy at becoming a mother was marred by a stay in prison for transporting drugs (which she did not knowingly do). Vedra, her infant daughter, was allowed to join her in K Wing, a special area for mothers with young children.

Throughout her incarceration Mehagian coped, alternating between depression and hope. Some of the most touching pages in her book describe the days spent there.

She once left safe comfort searching for adventure and enlightenment. She found both. And after her journeys she discovered that the very things she had sought to escape - home, family and tradition - were more important than she had imagined.

Siren's Feast holds 40 of the most delectable recipes to be found - read, eat, and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page-turning memoir, I couldn't put it down April 28, 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Siren's Feast left me breathless. I read Eat, Pray, Love last year and really enjoyed it. This book is Eat, Pray, Love on steroids. The added bonus of recipes laced throughout the memoir allows the reader to participate in the author's amazing & colorful life experiences. Living in Ibiza in the late 60s and early 70s (and opening the first vegetarian restaurant there), Nancy seemed to live the life of a hippy, a gypsy, a spiritual seeker, a participant in "free love" and all the while exploring life as a culinary journey. Nancy Mehagian has a gift with the written word. And her life experiences are as delicious as her recipes. I hope she'll write the continuation of her story. Like a terrific meal, it was richly satisfying. And I want more, more, more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystic Pilaf May 31, 2008
Format:Paperback
This is a page-turning odyssey of a young American woman of Armenian descent, who smoked (and inhaled), cooked, loved and lived the late `60s and early `70s traveling from Phoenix to Kathmandu and back.

Restless and unclear about her goals in life, she bounces from relationship to relationship, living only for the moment, and making increasingly more detrimental life choices without thinking them all the way through. With each new start, you keep hoping that she'll finally find her niche, only to have your hopes dashed when she casually moves on to the next big adventure.

By the time she gets back to Phoenix, she's done just about every hallucinogenic substance, slept with several attractive and also some unappealing men of various nationalities and backgrounds, started and abandoned projects and jobs, made pilgrimages and spur of the moment travel plans, living hand to mouth for most of the journey. Pregnant, and incarcerated in a British prison after accepting an offer that was obviously too good to be true, she reunites with her mother, and through her family, she finds the strength to carry on living.

This book introduces the reader to many forms of spiritual and "new age" thinking and mysticism, and is tied together by the mouth-watering recipes that are included with the story. The photographs in the middle section are also a nice touch. It would have been helpful if there was a list of the recipes with the page numbers included somewhere.

Although the author's lifestyle may be difficult to identify with, the writing style hooks you from the first chapter, and if you're like me, you won't be able to put it down.
