Editorial Reviews

Above And Beyond are a true dance music success story. As artists, DJs, remixers, and label owners, their dedication and independent ethos permeate everything they do. On "Oceanlab", the duo is joined by the vocal talents of Justine Suissa who has collaborated with some of the world's top DJs, including Armin Van Buuren and Chicane.

Oceanlab is the side project of Above & Beyond and singer Justine Suissa. Having unleashed some of clubland's most epic trance songs over the years (Sky falls down, clear blue water, satellite) a long overdue album finally materializes from this musical collaboration.

First, to fans who expect an album of thumping dancefloor vocal trance tunes you may be disappointed. The album is a mix of club ready cuts, chill out tracks and even some down tempo ambient type stuff. If you picked up Above and Beyond's own "tri-state" album last year expect something along the same line except with ethereal female vocals.

This album in my opinion is quite amazing! For those needing a dance floor fix "if i could fly" "come home" "lonely girl" and "on a good day" serve up Above and beyond's trademark dance beats, moody syths and nice electronic flourishes. For me "if I could fly" is worth the album purchase alone.

The chill-out tracks are awesome as well. The album opener "just listen" starts the album with a soft but insistent twinkling and sparse piano that sets the album tone of quiet beauty. The album mix of the club smash "miracle" is an acoustic/chill-out workout that takes the song in a more intimate and though provoking direction. While the message of climate change is present in both the album mix and last year's club version its easy to lose the message in the club beats. The album mix puts the message front and center. And only Above and Beyond cold make a globally conscious track about climate change avoid being cheesy and pretentious. The other down tempo tracks "I am what I am" "ashes" and "secret" also play to the groups songwriting strengths - lyrically not the deepest but beautiful and melodic.

This album is the perfect example of how a great melodic trance CD should be!

The vocals are absolutely stunning.

Fantastic dance album that is varied and surprisingly unrepetitive, with full-out trance anthems as well as down-tempo chillout tracks...

Justine Suissa's voice isn't the most powerful, but her plaintive vocals suit the beats well...

The bonus disc (available only in the S'pore edition) include remixes of past hits like 'Beautiful Together' and 'Sky Falls Down'...

Justine Suissa is one of those names that comes up when you talk about the dancefloor and the belly of the electronic beast. That's because she is a great talent when she puts out something and everything her vocals touch seem so golden. I personally love the stuff she pressed with the higher tempo, and was surprised when I heard tis because it isn't what i thought it was going to be. Still, it is breathtaking great in the way it takes a surreal, moody approach.

I was like a lot of people when I thought this was going to be more temponic. I had gotten accustomed to the way the beasts flowed, but the who thing changed when I listened to this album. In a lot of ways i thing this is a showcase for something that sometimes gets lost in the dancefloor BPM battles. vocals, no matter how amzing, are sometimes chopped up and repeated, sometimes drown out, or sometimes simply become expected when you listen. It isn't like other types of muasic because vocals, like any instrument, becomes just that - an instrument.

Here, I have to admit I was blown away as well. I say that with a love for specific songs but a feeling that this is generally slower paced and well-exectured and so much like a dream. Sometimes I just turn on all the tracks and let them play, allowing the album to become a thing that speaks volumes by itself.
It is hard to say that about most items and especially in an industry where a hit places something out there and makes somethign supposedly amazing.

If you don't know this album, listen to it. I think you will love what you hear provided that you don't have expectations. If you have those, put them aside and try to see this side project as a thing that proves just hw talented a person can be. This has always been beautiful and really deserves a podium where 5 -s tars can shine.
