Gospel Humor. Volume One. Humorous short story taken from the "Ain't Nobody Else Right But Us-All Others Goin' To Hell Church" seven book collection. Joe Bill, an Angel-in Training got into heaven through a loophole. He cannot get his wings until he turns around Rev. Knott Enuff Money and his spiritually challenged congregation. Joe Bill must first start with one of the churches most hypocritical members, Sister Betty. The only way Joe Bill can deal with this congregation is to see the humor in their actions and they give him plenty to laugh about. Getting wings won't be easy. Review

After reading this story and in between laughing, I had to get this on film. It will be shown on Gospel Today Video sometime next season. A must-see for all. -- Michael Alston, Producer & Host - Gospel Today Video show

Everybody knows someone in their church like Sister Betty. She's been in the way for a long time and she is just that "IN THE WAY" -- Lorraine Burnette-Jenkins /Actress & singer "Mama I Want to Sing"

One of the funniest religious pieces I've ever read or seen. What a message! It came all wrapped up in an in-your-face recognizable Holier Than Thou blanket -- Tony Robinson, Editor- Behind The Scenes magazine

Pat,,,,,I Looooooooved your story,,,,It was wonnnnderful!!!!!! It was so real. I can't wait to see what's next. I hope one day to see this on Broadway, or perhaps on a movie screen. God is truly using you to do wonderful things. -- Donna Wilson, News Commentator-WLIB/WBLS

That's a perfect name for the church. Whenever I could stop laughing, which was seldom, I realized that Sister Betty was an example of a frame of mind that WE church folk need to be purged from. -- Sandra Reaves, Actress & singer "Lean On Me," "Round Midnite", Late Great Ladies of Blues & Jazz

This is so smart and so original and so imaginatively written.. -- Doris Cooper, Editor/Hearst Book Group Company

More About the Author

Pat G'Orge (pronounced Gee-or-jay) - Walker is in a league of her own. This accomplished Christian author and comedienne has an amazing mind and talent for turning her observations of church life into gems of sidesplitting humor. It is her own special gift from God that enables G'Orge-Walker to depict the often ridiculous antics of church folk without subverting the Good News or watering down the potency of its message.

Pat G'Orge-Walker has paid a high price for the ever-present smile on her face. This Mt. Vernon, New York PK (preacher's kid) has survived a raging house fire; a violent assault; a car crash that mangled her body and a viral infection that left her temporarily blinded. Through it all, Pat quietly soaked in material from her father's Baptist congregation and her mother's Pentecostal assembly to create the stories that keep readers and audiences howling with laughter. Pat is a 'kept woman' whose life is held firmly and safely in God's hand. Mercy and compassion season every word spoken or written by Pat, who makes her story palpitate in the hearts of people who readily relate to victory over adversity.

The First Lady of Gospel Comedy forges a successful
career as author and comedian. She has paved the way for
many others in both fields. Pat's storytelling is likened to
Zora Neale Hurston's folklore'a documentation of
American culture and church life in literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walker is QUEEN of Gospel Comedy!, June 14, 2001

The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sister Betty! God's Calling You! (Mass Market Paperback)
As soon as Angel-In-Training Joe Bell enters Heaven, he receives an assignment that he must complete in order to receive his wings: He must try to help the wayward congregation - and their Rev. Knott Enuff Money - of the 'Ain't Nobody Else Right But Us - All Others Goin' To Hell' church. To help him with this almost impossible task, Joe receives help in the form of Sister Betty, an elderly, devout member of the congregation. Joe must first show Sister Betty the "light" before she can begin to help him in his quest. When Sister Betty receives a phone call from God while watching her soaps, it's only the beginning of this extremely humorous tale.

Pat G'Orge-Walker is truly the queen and founder of Gospel Comedy, and her mixture of God, love, spirituality, and humor are wonderful. Walker has created characters that are lively and animated, and her writing is crisp and witty. Walker doesn't try to browbeat you with scripture and morals, but she allows her story to entertain the reader as he/she takes their own messages from the piece. Reading this (and other) spiritually humorous tales by Walker is a MUST for readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A humorous yet thought-provoking look into the soul!, November 10, 1999
This review is from: Sister Betty! God's Calling You! (Mass Market Paperback)
Sister Betty is a hilarious book told in the straightforward, homespun language reminiscent of Langston Hughes' characters in "Simple." Although this book will leave you gasping with laughter, at the same time, it evokes deep-seated memories of childhood. Ma Cile has got to be one of the most memorable characters I've ever read about, with her brown eye and store-bought blue eye. Her strenghth reminds me of the grandmother in Maya Angelou's first book, "I know Why The Caged Bird Sing." If you weren't raised with the benefits of being reared by the wise old "souls," you can derive benefits vicariously through these stories. Although "Sister Betty" is a forerunner in the new genre of "Gospel Comedy," these stories are deceptively real. This book will make you laugh, but most of all, it will make you think. It poses the universal question: Am I my brother's keeper? Sure to carve out a place in the literary Hall of Fame of Afrocentric characters, (such as Walter Mosley's Easy, Mouse and Socrates), readers will remember Sister Betty, Sister Connie Fuse and the others long after they have closed the pages of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and powerful, September 14, 2002

This review is from: Sister Betty! God's Calling You! (Mass Market Paperback)
Pat G'Orge-Walker has managed to do what I feel most authors cannot---she has managed to tell an endearing story, layered with comedy, unforgettable characters and intertwined Bible-based messages...all without being preachy.

Her tale of Sister Betty receiving a telephone call from God and finding out that she wouldn't know God no matter how He appeared was beyond witty; it was innovative. I love the fact that she(Ms. Walker) gave us such homespun humor surrounding Ma Cile and her grandkids that would be familiar to anyone regardless of color or nationality. The message of LOVE came through loud and clear.

Unlike some who have reviewed that the story was short and not a novel (although it plainly states that it is a short story taken from a collection) does not bother me. I found it wonderful that such a wonderful story could be told in short fashion. However, like most of the reviewers, I too, would love to see this and other stories by Ms. Walker either on television or on stage.

I will definitely be one of the first to purchase her NOVEL when it is released in July 02.
