Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this savvy manual, financial adviser Broussard targets her message to African American women languishing in low-paying jobs: you can start your own business on a shoestring budget-now-by finding an enterprise that suits your lifestyle and personality while it maximizes your experience and contacts. She offers detailed advice on start-up costs, recordkeeping, computerizing, obtaining insurance, legal matters, franchising, publicity and advertising. Broussard (The Black Woman's Guide to Financial Independence) pays special attention to black women's networking organizations, sources providing start-up capital, selecting partners and forming joint alliances with large corporations. She profiles successful black women entrepreneur "role models" in such fields as management consulting, radio, graphic design, catering, personnel, retail, cosmetics and fashion. Her well-organized guide is at once practical and visionary. Author tour.

From Library Journal

Both these books focus on the successes of African American women in the corporate world. Broussard's (The Black Woman's Guide to Financial Independence, LJ 1/96) guide is a workshop/workbook for would-be entrepreneurs, with stories and advice from women who have already made it. To get from dream to reality, she maps the necessary route to success, listing ideal start-up businesses, showing how to set goals, and proceeding with the nuts and bolts of the entire process. Broussard concludes by offering strategies and tips on how sister CEOs can manage and market their businesses. A valuable resource, this is highly recommended for most libraries. On the other hand, like Patricia Reid-Merrit in Sister Power (LJ 8/96), Ehrhart-Morrison, former director-manager of operations at the Los Angeles Convention Center, concentrates primarily on those women who have already made their mark in their respective fields. She interviews 32 of these successes, beginning with their roots, their education, and their triumphs over racism and sexism. She then pursues their career strategies and essential connections to family and spirituality. This makes for lackluster reading but could be helpful to aspiring young businesswomen. A marginal purchase.?Ann Burns, "Library Journal"

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended to ALL women!, March 1, 1998
This review is from: Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business (Hardcover)
Sister CEO is very motivating, realistic, and I highly recommend it.
Broussard is obviously a go-getter and would be an asset in anyone's circle.
Her book would be very useful to ANY women who aspires entreprenuerialship.
Only one view in her book I did not agree with, and that was on the subject of financing your business. My interpretation was to borrow, beg, or take money out of your house, to do whatever was legally necessary to finance your business -just get started-. Understood if you're single, but if you are married this finanical decision should be agreed upon between BOTH partners.
Other than that, a Job Well Done, Broussard!

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel Like a winner!, January 8, 2007
This review is from: Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business (Hardcover)
Well, I must say I have had my book for about 1 year and I was praying and asking God for something more. He answered me, I picked up Sister CEO and it was there the whole time. This book inspired me to walk in and take the company to new levels it helped to change my way of thinking, especially the testimonies that I can relate to that makes you feel good about the growing pains. Since reading the book I have a new attitude, I hold my head up, and I am more ready than ever to go to new height's. Thanks Cheryl you are reaching and helping CEO's like me who really needed the confirmation and inspiration.

This was a wonderful book; I still use it as a guide. I first saw this book 10 years ago when I started my first business. I keep it on my desk to thumb through it when I have to!!!
