Sister Trade In - What a Good Idea or Is It?, June 13, 2010

I was the youngest and had to share a room while I grew up. Like the 2 sisters Briana and Julianne siblings to get on one another's nerves. Call the Sister Exchange, but be careful. It sounds like these trade ins were some real lemons.
Brianna jumps at the chance to get a different sister, but learns Julianne could be far worse. Read the book and see what sister suits her best.
The people in the illustrations are charming. The resemblance between mother and children provide a solid foundation to build the story upon. The expressions depicted enhance the text and combine prose and art in a melded dance. Highly recommended.

Trading in Your Sister, is this possible?, May 24, 2010

Brianna longs for the day not to have her annoying younger sister, Julianne, as a constant tag-a-long. Life would be so much better with someone else. To solve her problem, Brianna decides to trade in her sister, just like a used car. Much to her pleasure mother says it's possible through the Sister Exchange. Brianna is beyond excited and happily listens in on her mother's phone call. Each choice presented to Brianna never seems up to her standards, until the final choice. Should she make this exchange or stick to who she knows?
Children's author, Kevin McNamee, expertly brings to life what many siblings wish they could do at one time or another. The Sister Exchange wonderfully explores how each person has their place in the family circle, better or for worse.
Illustrator, Kit Grady, brilliantly brings to life the characters in The Sister Exchange leaving the reader with the need to hug each character.

Do you, or when you were small did you, have a sister or brother who bugged you to death? Brianna wants her younger sister Julianne to stop bothering her. Ever since Julianne was born, she has followed Brianna around like a shadow, and Brianna has decided that something needs to be done about it. So she asks her mom if she can have a new sister--not to get another baby sister, but to trade in the one she has, like her friend Jenna's parents traded their car for a better one. Mom picks up the phone, calls "The Sister Exchange," and tells Brianna about all the kinds of sisters they might have for her. Which one will she choose?
Having had a younger brother when I was growing up, and being the father of two sons, I have lots of personal experience with the problem of sibling rivalry. It always saddens me to hear of brothers and sisters who grow up to have such a falling out that they never speak to one another again. Author Kevin McNamee's delightful story combines with illustrator Kit Grady's humorous drawings to encourage children in developing, maintaining, and appreciating the relationships that they sustain with a sister or a brother that can result in a lifetime of enjoyment and comradeship. Would you prefer a sister who literally chats your ears off, who snores your bed off the floor, or whose feet are so stinky they'll peel paint off the walls--or the one you have? As kids today say, that's a no-brainer!
