A journey well worth taking!,
This review is from: Sister Holler (Audio CD)
This remarkable album returns the Nields sisters to their roots with a journey through the folk tradition that takes us from the mountains to the delta, across the sea to the Celtic country-side and back again. By far my favorite song along the way is "Ain't That Good News." It lifts my spirits every time I hear it.
All the songs on the album borrow heavily from traditional folk keystones, but the combination of Nerrisa's elegant singing and song-writing and Katryna's sumptuous voice transform these songs into what can only be described as a modern, folk, roots voyage that is on the verge of being on the great folks albums. On the chance that it is, add it to your collection.

I first heard of the The Nields when I listened to them at a concert over 10 years ago. They were clearly the crowd favorite. I have been a fan ever since. I don't even have to listen to one track before buying their CD. I love every one. Their music always reminds me of sitting out in the evenings on the back porch in the summer.

I've enjoyed all of Nerissa and Katryna's solo albums, but Sister Holler is the best. From the first listen, I fell in love with every song. Probably because of their reliance on earlier songs and forms, they're familiar but each also brings something new. Listening to the album lifts me up and gives me hope and sometimes makes me cry. A truly beautiful piece of art.

The best I've heard them yet.,

Anyone with a soul, a pulse, and at least one good ear would be glad to have this album. Nerissa and Katryna Nields have incredible voices and serious musical talent. These folk-singer sisters' musicianship ranks up there with that of the most accomplished classical musicians around, yet their music is their very own living and breathing human experience. Hear them live just once and you'll agree.
The songs on this album are varied enough in style that each track will grab your attention, but somehow they still form a good, cohesive collection. While the Nields are very candid about having borrowed certain musical elements (the very thorough liner notes actually use the word "steal"), they still bring to life something new that is very much their own through the infusion of their upbeat (though honestly and realistically so) personalities and through the truly unique and wonderful timbre of their voices- which somehow keep getting better. I very rarely buy albums anymore, but this is one I'll listen to again and again. As approachable as their music is, it still has more than enough substance to keep it from getting old. I'll be buying more copies of this one to give as gifts. |
