Book Description

"Funny and informative. The book celebrates our differences with gentle humor. Suzanna obviously loves people and is here to help us with a big challenge. Loved it." Deborah Seddersen, Minneapolis, MN

"The recipes are great for me, I never knew lentils were so good. Mostly I enjoyed the differences between the two sisters, because I have a sister like that. I'm still losing weight, and it helps a lot to have more perspective about this process. Thank you!" Mindy Markham, Tulsa, OK

Sister Island is a companion book to The Sugar Divorce. It's about what happens in the longer term, while The Sugar Divorce helps with getting started on your own journey to fitness.

From the Book
Six months into the process I traveled from San Francisco to Duluth, Minnesota, where I stayed with my sister for a month. A whole month of sister stuff! This is where this book got written. Being with Kathy and her husband in their highly musical world is like being in a cocoon -- or on a special island. We spent hours in our sister world, talking about what it means to take control of your weight and build a stronger body.

After publishing The Sugar Divorce, I've spent many hours interacting with people who are finding success with slow carb foods and the short exercises. Lots of people don't even do the exercises. They have a new relationship with sugar, and that can result in a dramatic body change all by itself.

My time with my sister taught me that there are more ways to do this. Kathy's version is so personalized, it surprised me that it worked. Even more surprising was how far off the slow carb world I ventured, without gaining back any weight. This slow carb thing is very flexible. It has a lot to do with moderation, and a lot to do with the way you view the food on your plate.

In Sister Island, you'll find several recipes we cooked up during our time together. The exercises are described in detail, including how few I normally manage to do on any given day. At the end you'll find 35 tips to print out, as reminders of all the ways you can keep your new promises to being fit.

See you on the other side!

Now the author of The Sugar Divorce has brought her sister into her experience- she is too funny! She based her story on her experience with research based information and shared it as it relates to herself. Very real, down to earth.

More About the Author

Suzanna Stinnett was born in Oklahoma and lives in the San Francisco Bay area as well as Duluth, Minnesota. Among her early influences were the Carnegie Library, the meditative bison of the Wichita Mountains, and a family of readers who loved language. Formative years included tolerance-building exercises such as sitting in scratchy petticoats for long hours in Baptist church pews, where she was frequently told to "be still." During these trying hours, her mind was likely to be filled with rhymes and images from Dr. Seuss books.

Storytelling began early, before the first year of school. Stinnett wrote three novels during her 20s and 30s, while producing workshops on brain health and the non-fiction book on the imagination, later published by Sourcebooks as "Little Shifts."

Since the 1980s, Suzanna has enjoyed the Bay area, mainly living in the decadently fertile counties directly north of the Golden Gate. She draws inspiration from the fog-wrapped Pacific coast, and has lived among the elk and bobcats at the shore of Tomales Bay.

Today she can be found writing fiction in the coffee-shop churches of Marin and counties northward, wearing soft clothing with the neck tags carefully removed. She is currently working on picture books and chapter books for early readers with a focus on space and science. The chapter book series is "Starship in the Attic," and the umbrella for these adventures is "Starship Makers."

In the mid 1990s she began pursuing her vision to make writing and publishing tools available to everyone. This vision emerged as Bay Area Bloggers Society, a user group in the San Francisco Bay area with a 700+ membership and local sponsors including O'Reilly Media.

With the Starship Makers and Starship in the Attic, Suzanna brings together the exciting projects currently under way in the space industry with the minds of young children who are ready to imagine their own adventures in science and space.
