5.0 out of 5 stars Sister Kate, August 7, 2000
This review is from: Sister Kate (Audio CD)
Hearing the beautiful, rich voice of Kate Taylor is pure pleasure. For the uninitiated, I believe hers is a timbre reminiscent of Laura Nyro's. This is a good collection of tunes -- upbeat as well as ballads -- with a very seventies sound to the arrangements. For example, the fat horns on "Look at Granny Run, Run," or the funky guitar throughout the album. (Hats off also to drummer Russ Kunkel, but I digress.) Gospel, blues, bluegrass, and even boogie-woogie flavors are lurking here. Well, we're talking American music. Kate really belts it out on "Sweet Honesty," however I maintain "You Can Close Your Eyes" is the centerpiece of this lovely, feisty, soulful work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lost Classic, July 25, 2008

This review is from: Sister Kate (Audio CD)
James Taylor's sister Kate has carved out a cult following for herself in music since emerging in the early 1970's -- but if SISTER KATE had gotten the exposure it deserved, she'd have given James a run for his money, and been more prominent than siblings Alex or Livingston Taylor. Working with most of the same musicians who appeared on Carole King's Tapestry, Taylor proves a powerful balladeer, able to cross effortlessly from pop to blues to country to soul, and Peter Asher's production gives her settings that are alternately (and sometimes simultaneously) lush and lean, with King herself, as well as Merry Clayton and Linda Ronstadt singing backup. This is a stunning record from beginning to end, the kind that i love to give as gifts, especially as it's now out in an affordable (and beautifully remastered) US edition, as opposed to the hyper-expensive Japanese CD previously available. Brava Sister Kate!!!!!!!

I loved this LP when it was released in 1971. Some of the top musicians of the day are on this, and it was produced by Peter Asher. Kate Taylor still records and performs (check out her recent release "Beautiful Road" available here), but this 37 year old collection holds up remarkably well. I received my copy from Amazon last week, and have been playing nonstop.
