1.0 out of 5 stars Violence Mars the Satire, June 30, 2008
What could have been a vehicle for biting satire on established religion, and perhaps even character growth on the part of Sr. Mary and others succumbs to gratuitous violence in the end as Sr. Mary shoots two of her former students. She decides one probably went to hell because she was unrepentant; the other to heaven because, although he was gay, had confessed that morning and had not any opportunity to "sin" again before she shot him. I was going along with the well-deserved critique of inflexible religion, but the killings at the end just ruined it for me.

It's my understanding this was a stage play before being made a movie, and that the real audience actually then served as the audience at Sr. Mary's Christmas presentation where all this takes place; she lectures and the audience becomes part of the play itself. Unfortunately, what might work on the stage can't always be successfully translated to film. Diane Keaton is a wonderful actress, but this was a script she should have rejected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not For Everyone, January 1, 2009
Personally, I found the jokes hit their mark and the ending elicited enough tears for me to call the movie an over all sucess. However, I understand that some people found the movie heavy handed, bias, and cliche. I empathize with them, but even agree to some point. It's very easy to be offended. I think people just need to approach the movie expecting to be entertained. If you don't let go of the chip on your shoulder and expect everything to be 100% factual pertaining to the Catholic Church, I think you're going to be in for disappointment. Just chill out and enjoy.
