In this anthology, 49 women share their experiences as Native Americans through poetry, essays, and short fiction. Divided into four sections "Changing Women," "Strong Hearts," "New Age Pocahontas," and "In the Arms of the Skies" the selections focus on the centrality of the Native experience. Writers including Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, and Roberta Hill tell of harsh mothers, gentle mothers, drunken fathers, strong fathers, and children growing up in a white world. The range of the collection is represented by the titles "First Woman," "Shadow Sisters," "Piece Quilt: An Autobiography," "Red Hawk Woman," "Grandmother, Salish Mathematician," and "The Frybread Queen," among others. The end material includes brief biographies of each contributor and information about the tribes they represent. These are strong, well-written stories of very real experiences and emotions. More About the Author
Winner of the 2009 Minnesota Book Award for her poetry collection National Monuments, Heid E. Erdrich has authored three books of poems and co-edited Sister Nations: Native American Women on Community. Her first play, Curiosities, was produced by Pangea World Theater in 2010. She is Ojibwe, enrolled at Turtle Mountain. Heid grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota and attended Dartmouth College and Johns Hopkins University. Heid has taught writing for twenty years at colleges, universities and as a visiting author. In 2012 her new and selected works will be published. Heid's official website is heid.erdrich.com

This anthology of contemporary Native women's voices is the first of its kind to weave a plethora of voices and visions together. Many great authors and works in the book. A worthwhile purchase!
