This review is from: Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us (MP3 Download)
[Review of "Raising Sand" CD].
A dream album for Zep fans, especially, here we have a stripped-down, Plant-Strauss collaboration, on an organic foundation, with engaging, uplifting, traditional Country music acoustics.
Gotta say, a favorite booksellers haunt of mine had this deal cranked up in the P.A., and I thought I was listening to an Everly Brothers remix collection, or somethin' like that. The cover of Phil and Don's 1964 Latinized C & W Rocker "Gone, Gone, Gone", is so cleanly realized that EB purists won't mind at all. (Their initial confusion should be assuaged by the inclusion of another Everlys echo, "Stick With Me Baby", cut ).
Allison's vocal on "Sister Rosetta..." is totally enchanting, in a masterful mix).
I can hear some aural similiarity to this sound in a Gillian Welch CD I added to my collection, another mellow, almost bluegrass opus. A small citicism of this kind of presentation is that can be a monochromatic zzz-inducer. It's hoped that any "dream album" can at least keep you awake. (Okay, bad pun...but I'm getting a little woozy myself. Where's that hammock I hung up in the closet?...).
T-Bone Burnett should have a Grammy coming his way. Oh yeah, let's not exclude Robert Plant and Allison Krauss from that podium.
