Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The bond between women can be as crucial and life affirming as the umbilical cord is to babies. Yet it is also a bond that has been misunderstood, feared, and deliberately severed in the shadow of patriarchal cultures. Drawing upon ancient myth, female tribes, contemporary sororities, and real life stories, Brenda Peterson offers an honest portrait of sisters--both the chosen ones and the ones we are given. We meet Isabel Allende's adopted sister, the exotic jeweler Tabra. We explore the subtext of a slumber party, and are asked to look honestly at the abortion war, which has become our sister war. Peterson's delightful wit, reflective nature, and gutsy truth telling entice and challenge readers to illuminate their own sister stories.

From Library Journal

Novelist (Duck and Cover, HarperCollins, 1991) and essayist (Living by Water, Alaska Northwest Bks., 1991) Peterson here tells stories about her own relationships with biological sisters, friends, and lesbian lovers, and about those of other women, e.g., novelist Isabel Allende and jewelry-maker Tabra Tunoa, two sisters who overcome their codependent relationship, and two women who are sometimes lovers, sometimes friends, and always in conflict. According to Peterson, a woman can be a "sister" with anyone female, including a dolphin, but the nature of this bond is not analyzed nor are the generalizations about sisterhood made clear. Also Peterson perpetuates gender stereotypes, e.g., female scientists think differently than male. However, she does emphasize the need for women to face their dark side, including female violence, and for all of us to value rather than fear passion between women. For comprehensive women's studies collections and where there is strong interest in the subject.

"A tender, lyrical account, Peterson expresses genuine love for her family and gratitude for their gifts. Peterson always seeks common ground." LIBRARY JOURNAL

"Blends her unique autobiography with compassionate and level-headed observations about family, food, religion, life and our relationship with living things. Peterson has a gift for describing her life's many adventures with disarming understatement and narrative poise." KIRKUS REVIEWS

"Brenda Peterson's picaresque memoir is a mesmerizing treat, at turns inspiring and hilarious. Her keen-eyed descriptions of the natural world, and a delicious sense of fun, combine beautifully with tales of protecting seals, whales, hope, and other wild things."
Diane Ackerman, author THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE

"A loving, luminous portrait of an irresistibly intriguing family, told by the most fascinating member of all -- the one who doesn't fit in. It's alive with stars over the Grand Canyon, scents of the sea, menus at family gatherings, and singing a descant. The story is told with such truth and tenderness that you can't help loving the whole family."
Sy Montgomery, author of THE GOOD, GOOD PIG

"I've been a fan of Brenda Peterson's novels since the witty DUCK AND COVER. But I can't think of another book at all like this memoir -- it's so odd and wonderful. Peterson writes here of family and conflicting faiths with moving and poignant humor."
Diane Johnson, author of LE DIVORCE

"Brenda Peterson, one of the most eloquent nature writers of our time, takes on human nature. Read this book and share it widely. It is that important."

This review is from: Sister Stories: Taking the Journey Together (Paperback)
This book is a fascinating exploration of the role of sisters in different cultures, societies, and even species! The author recounts personal stories, cultural observations, and scientific studies to demonstrate the concept of "sister" in a dozen different lights, challenging the meanings we associate with that word. If you are curious to find out what being a sister can really mean in a broader context than "female sibling", this is the book for you.
