Book Description

Finally, a book of meditations for African American women that understands the world they live in. Centering on the lessons God teaches us at work, at church, and in our relationships, this book of devotions uses stories and settings that will resonate with women of color--urban life, office culture, and the leading of the Spirit in things large and small. Using Scripture, conventional wisdom, and stories from the African American community, each devotional will show women how their faith can empower them to have success on the job--at whatever workplace they find themselves. With topics such as respect, resourcefulness, image, timeliness, honesty, negativity, and balancing work and home, each devotion ends with a "power move"--practical affirmations that will move readers toward success at work.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Encouragement, advice, and real talk from a successful sister

It's not always easy to live your faith during the nine to five. But no matter where you work, that's the mission field in which God has placed you. It doesn't matter if you're a waitress or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company--you're equally important to God. And he wants to use you to build his kingdom.

Sistergirl Devotions is for you--the working woman who wants to grow spiritually while on the job. Using Scripture, "sistergirl" wisdom, and true stories, each down-to-earth devotional shows how your faith can empower you to have success no matter where you work. With topics such as respect, resourcefulness, image, timeliness, honesty, setbacks, and balancing work, church, and home, each devotion ends with a "Power Move"--practical affirmations that will drive you toward victory.

"Carol Mackey has done a masterful job of incorporating the practicality of God's Word into daily meditations. She does not shrink from the real issues we often struggle with. Carol addresses them boldly, giving clear answers and 'Power Moves' to equip us to have the victory we long to experience in our everyday lives."--Michelle McKinney Hammond, author of The Power of Being a Woman

Absolutely brilliant!"--Kimberla Lawson Roby, New York Times bestselling author; author of A Deep Dark Secret and Be Careful What You Pray For

"Sistergirl Devotions delivers inspiring daily nuggets that will warm the soul and motivate every reader to succeed on the job for the Lord."--Stephanie Perry Moore, author of the Payton Skky series and the Beta Gamma Pi series

5.0 out of 5 stars Life's Instruction Book April 26, 2010
I have always said that the Bible is life instruction book. You can find any answer to life's problems in the Bible. It would be great to have a book that showed people how the Bible helps them live, Spirit filled productive lives. This book does that and more. It explains how our job touches every part of our life and how we can advance in every aspect of life. I read the Bible every day and felt I knew all the lessons the Bible teaches us, whether I have mastered the lessons or not. This book has shown me many more life lessons and will help me grow as a worker as well as a father, husband, friend, and follower of Christ. The book is marketed to help the African-American woman in her work place, but it does so much more. It transcends gender and race to help every person lead a better life in and outside the work place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make Sure Jesus Is In The Mix September 24, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As editor in chief of Black Expressions Book Club, Carol Mackey knows firsthand the trials and tribulations of the workplace and how to stay grounded and focused while enduring them. She has written SISTERGIRL DEVOTION: Keeping Jesus in the Mix at Work to help us accomplish this as well.

Mackey provides insight and stories on a range of topics covering: making the most of opportunities at work in "Use What You Got to Get What You Want", learning and growing in your patience in "The Waiting Game", and recognizing that one person's blessing isn't stopping yours in "Don't Be Hatin': There Are Enough Blessings to Go Around." Every devotional topic is followed by a "Power Move" and "My Confession." The "Power Moves" are sections that give you something to think about and focus on each day. In "My Confession", you are making your personal declaration for the day's devotion. I have two personal favorites so far, "Develop an Attitude of Gratitude: In All Things Give Thanks" and "Lord, What Am I Doing Here? You're Exactly Where You're Suppose to Be." The first two caused me to change my attitude at work. There were many days I would say, "Why am I in this job? This isn't what I went to school all those years to do." After reading these devotions and declaring my confession, I no longer ask the question or make the statement. I just look at the fact that I'm employed with gratitude and make the best of everything. It's amazing how the change in thinking changed my mood.

The 90 devotions, Mackey selected for the SISTERGIRL DEVOTION: Keeping Jesus in the Mix at Work are right on point for the things we, as not only women, but African-American women, have to deal with every day.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a devotional August 15, 2010
Sistergirl Devotions by Carol M. Mackey is broken down into 90 life lessons. This book is ideal for a Women's Bible Study Group or a focused Sunday School Class. Mackey's chapter titles are so informative for a Christian education teacher that they can create their own Sunday School Class Curriculum coupling twelve life lessons together, which have similar subject matters (i.e. working moms, working wives, office politics.)

Most importantly, readers can use this book as a guide to help them navigate themselves toward and through the corporate ceiling without having to lay down their religion to get there.

Sistergirl Devotions is more than a devotional. Mackey gives partners life lessons with personal anecdotes, scriptural reference, action plans [her power moves] and guided prayer for readers to use when they connect with a topic. Kudos!

5.0 out of 5 stars SisterGirl Giets You Through! May 10, 2010
This book gets you through! It is beautifully crafted to work as a daily devotional, a when you need it book, or simply a good read. The author openly shares her journey which gives rise to a shared experience. Each chapter is easy to relate to a subject or situation in your own life. This makes it effortless to apply the lesson. You can feel the truth and power of these lessons deep. You know the author isn't steering you wrong. And the principles covered in the book go way beyond the job and can be extended to other life situations. This will be a book you will happily continue to go back and re-read. It will become the Sistergirl that helps get you through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Words To Change You From The Inside Out May 23, 2010
Whether you are a new Christian or someone who has a committed relationship to the Lord, you will find this book helpful. Although Carol MacKey is the author listed on the book cover, she only God's messenger, because these words and prayers were truly inspired by Him.

The book is well written, easy to read, and full of practical ways to live your faith from nine to five and beyond. Best of all, each installment is based on a different Scripture from God's word and the "Power Moves", were an absolute actionable blessing. It doesn't take long to read each day's devotional but what you read sticks with you throughout the day. I don't believe anyone could read from this devotional and not be changed.

I was really blessed by the entire book from the introduction to the end, but one of my favorite-favorites was Number 31 - Signs and Wonders - Believing miracles for yourself and your coworkers. In a time when we are challenged to do more with less on our jobs, this mediation truly reminded me that God is in complete control at all times and in every way and that we should be mindful to pray and care for our community at work. Can I tell you there are 90 of them? And all are power-packed with a word that will stir your heart.

I recommend it for all the "Sistergirls" who really want to keep Jesus in the Mix on the Job. You will be blessed.
