5.0 out of 5 stars Book Sisterhood of the rose
Great book, It is Jim Marrs first novel, although he has written many Best selling factual books, he is an old investigative journalist, and this book is fact filled will true historical happenings that you probably never heard about. Written in the form of a novel to give license to the Authors conjecture.

2.0 out of 5 stars Barbie VS Hitler, November 22, 2009
This review is from: The Sisterhood of the Rose (Hardcover)
Oh boy.. where to start...? This story basis is a great idea. A group of women during world war two form a sisterhood against Hitler and the Axis. Great idea! The problem is the women that form this group. According to this novel, it consists of not only Barbie and Ken, but Mussolini's mistress, Stalin's daughter, and even Eva Braun! When Eva Braun entered the picture, the book became so preposterous to me, I could go no further.

The heroine is Giselle, a former ballerina turned archeologist. (Beautiful, blonde, and very well endowed in the chest department AND filthy rich.) After a dig gone bad in South America, she sets out to take back the crystal skull stolen from her and avenge her lover's death. The man she is after is an SS officer for Hitler. World war two is disrupting Europe. Barbie (Giselle) hooks up with a former lover, Michel (I'm calling him Ken) and proceeds to get sidetracked on her quest by forming the all girls club and getting a decoder to England among other things. After recruiting all the above mentioned women or at least using them in some way, the story just became too implausible for me. On top of that, I grew tired of Barbie and Ken being so perfect and "ma chere" this and "ma cheri" that. I think by page 200, readers will realize that Barbie and Ken are mad about each other.

Something else I didn't like is the lack of emotions. It was like being on the outside looking in. The characters sit around and have their conversations but what are they thinking?

A good idea. It probably would have worked for me had the characters been a bit different.

This book is a bunch of data thrown at you, with a poor attempt at hiding it within dialogue. What little action there is in this book is pretty good, but all in all, it's a snoozer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Adjective Overload, January 14, 2011
I am familiar with the topics covered by this book so I looked forward to reading a fictional work that incorporated some of these conspiracy theories and mysteries. The possibilities were exciting and really you could not go wrong in having a great story.

However, in hindsight this book would have been better left unwritten, at least by this author. According to his biog his previous books were all factual, and this was reflected in the style of writing he used for this book - it was not suited to a fictional work.

For example, he employed all the usual derogatory and slang terms for WW2 German troops, but in addition insisted on using every available adjective listed in an English dictionary. This appeared true for a lot of the other action narrative as well, and I imagine he had run short when he wrote the line "She devised a smile...". Since when do characters "devise" a smile?

The writing was full of well worn cliches, which were overused. A story that was obviously compiled from different fragments, which were not tied together well. But worst of all two dimensional characters that it was difficult to either remember or care about. I mean, the majority of these characters were real, historial people so how could a writer fail in making them "come alive" on the page?

If you are looking for a book that uses old conspiracy theories for a fictional story then I suggest you give this one a miss and choose a Dan Brown or a Michael Baigent novel.

2.0 out of 5 stars stick to non-fiction, December 20, 2011

This review is from: The Sisterhood of the Rose (Hardcover)
Mr Marrs has written many books which make some sensational claims. He backs them up with the scantest of evidence and much of his work is speculation. His first book was Crossfire, which contains the most actual evidence to support the JFK assassination conspiracy. The books written after it, while entertaining, have little if any evidence to support the claims.

This is an attempt at fiction, although Mr Marrs tries to make the claim this could be real also. It has just about every conspiracy theory rolled into one big secret to nicely tie them altogether. Most conspiracy theorists want one huge theory to encompass all the ideas out there, no matter how wacky they are.

The treasure of Rennes-les-Chateau, secret societies and Nazis almost sounds like an Indiana Jones movie. The end of the book of it was all a dream or was it is cheesy at best.

Mr Marrs does write an epilogue explaining all the ideas in the book are true. He also includes a dictionary of symbols which fits in. For a while, I was a big fan of Mr Marrs but started to reread many of his books. He does rely too much on other authors works and does little or no fact checking on his own. Crossfire is his best work as I have noted, and he at least did homework. Even some of the claims in that book are a bit far fetched (two Oswalds). He also relies too heavily on remote viewers and states what they claim as fact.

If one enjoys fiction books, they might like this. I bought this out of curiosity as I don't read fiction. I found the story a bit dull partly because I know it is fake.

Marrs who usually writes non-fiction has written this excellent book, fact based on fiction you would have to say. The story is just full of WWII history I was never aware of. I'd like to say more but it has already been said in the comments area here. I will say you will be very surprised at the ending.

I've read several of Jim's non-fiction books and love his easy to read prose that's filled with an unbelievably dense amount of information. He's done the same thing with "Sisterhood of the Rose" but this time wrapped all those juicy facts and conspiracy theories in a WW2 thriller full of Nazis messing around with occult artefacts, secret bases in Agartha, crystal skulls, etc.

Loved it!

The subject is "Conspiracy Theory" a 'theory' about a 'conspiracy' that is NOT REAL and has no basis in fact therefore not very enjoyable and it would be nice to see Mr. Marrs get back to reality, I saw him live once back in Alien Agenda days and he was VERY Good! Sort of reminds me now of Jesse Ventura and his rediculous show 'Conspiracy Theory'. I mean Jesse was on Larry King and said that he wanted the draft reinstituted.
