4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Read, February 19, 2004
This review is from: Sisterhood Situation (Paperback)
I pleasantly enjoyed this book, even though at first I thought it would a typical fictional read with 4 young women going through the same old trials that I see in every other African American girlfriends book. This story follows the life of four college friends who maintain their differences yet come together in solidarity through friendship. Through their friendship they support one another and learn to become responsible young women. Their individual characters and personalities are addictive and are ones we can relate to, and their friendship is one that everyone would be lucky to have. The trials and challenges the women go through will keep you enthralled and I especially enjoyed that there was no profanity or extreme sexuality which kept the story classy and all the more enjoyable for me to read. This story will make you laugh, cry, and beg for more. I would love to see a sequel to this novel. Buy this book you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sisters in Spirit, October 31, 2003

This review is from: Sisterhood Situation (Paperback)
At first glance one would think that SISTERHOOD SITUATION by Janette McCarthy Louard is a typical book about four college seniors and their exploits. That would be a wrong assumption because this book offers much more, including lessons to be learned by lending subtle and not so subtle messages, which can be enjoyed and savored by all. SISTERHOOD SITUATION will take you back to your college days, and have you shaking your head and screaming out loud as each woman funnels through their trials and tribulations.

Reva, Opal, Precious and Faith are seniors at Middlehurst, an all women's college in Massachusetts. Despite the fact that each woman's background is different, they form a bond that is hard to break. SISTERHOOD SITUATION takes the reader on a journey through the senior year of the four protagonists and back in time during their upbringings in Harlem, Cleveland and Boston. Each woman has an appealing personality that, at times, allows her to feed off the other, and at other times, has her ready to strangle some common sense into the other. As each woman's story is told, we get a chance to meet their parents and siblings, which helps to bring their personalities into focus and also assists with understanding some of the decisions each makes. The reader is also treated with the insertion of the men in their lives, be it their fathers, brothers, boyfriends or associates. Who are these men and how do they help shape these women? As seniors do we see them come full circle; do we see their growth and do we witness what Middlehurst has offered them in terms of life lessons?

SISTERHOOD SITUATION is a familiar and enlightening read. Janette McCarthy Louard has penned a book with a continuous storyline that may have you wondering what will become of these four sisters in spirit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sticking together through thick and thin, October 13, 2003
This review is from: Sisterhood Situation (Paperback)
Heroines: varied

Four girls are muddling their way through their final year at Middlehurst college in Massachusetts: Brainy Harlem-based Reva, who is trying not to cut herself on the shards of her mother's shattered dreams. Rich, has-it-all Opal, who doesn't know how good she's got it until it's nearly all gone. Sweet, plump Precious who loves everyone but herself. And sheltered Faith who is standing on a precipice and is at risk of throwing herself over the edge.

All four girls have to juggle academics with friendship and the struggle to get out from under a parent's wing or shadow and discover who they are meant to be. And along with finding herself, each young woman finds love--sometimes in the most unexpected places.

What worked for me:

I do enjoy reading book about gal pals, especially gals I'd love to have as friends of my own. These particular characters sucked me into their lives so that I just kept on turning the pages to find out what would happen to them.

This novel was also filled with little bits of wisdom, one thought which struck me singularly hard I plan to store up for use with my own children one day: "I didn't raise you to fit in. I raised you to set standards."

Size-wise the girls ranged from sylphlike to plump (Once again I ignored the numbers assigned to the bigger girls and went with their descriptions when determining their size.)

What didn't work for me:

The copy I read was an uncorrected proof, which made for some bumpy reading. Hopefully those typos have been caught in the finished version of the book.

Overall:

"Sisterhood Situation" is quick, enjoyable read for fans of women's fiction.

If you liked "Sisterhood Situation" you might also enjoy "The Saving Graces", "All of Me", "The Fat Friend", "The Way It Is", "Circle of Friends", "Tara Road", "Fast Women", "The High Price of a Good Man", or "Commitments".
