FIRST AND FOREMOST: if you're gonna watch this season go to the MTV website and view it for free.

AND NOW MY CRITIQUE: Admittedly I hadn't watched The Real World since I was in my 20s (now I'm in my 30s, and that could be having an impact on my opinion), but I decided to watch this season because it takes place in DC, which is near where I live. It was appalling! The young males (I don't call them "men" because that is SO NOT what they were!) would get drunk in the evenings and become aggressive toward the girls. One young male, Ty, even shoved one of the girls around and threatened to "destroy" her while he was drunk...and the producers never intervened at all!

Another young male, Andrew, talked non-stop about women in such demeaning, dehumanizing, and misogynistic ways (he also was reported to make a lot of racist comments, which were censored). As an African American female, I found him the MOST disgusting and disturbing! For the first half of the season this young man's whole story was about trying to get laid...he eventually falls in love, though (toward the end), which, I must admit, was pretty cute (he at least stopped being so derogatory toward women). Another young male, Josh, cheated on his long-distance girlfriend ON CAMERA, and then had the nerve to get aggressive with one of the girls (Ashley) because she couldn't lie well enough to effectively cover for him!

The only reasonable young man was the gay one, Mike; he actually had a good story and some obvious personal growth. But the rest of those boys really created a frat-house atmosphere that I feel was VERY unsafe (for the young women in particular) and should not have been permitted by the producers. In fact, things got so bad that one of the males (Ty again, and drunk!
