From Library Journal
For the past 15 years Denker has traveled extensively throughout Central Asia. This work recounts her journeys in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Turkey, and Kashmir during the first five years of her journeys, from 1979 to 1983. Denker is a journalist by trade, and her writing is immediate and intimate, whether she is recalling a high-altitude visit with a Hunza shaman or volunteer work with Mother Teresa. She is at her best, however, when she writes of the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and its devastating effect on the people of that country. In June 1985 Denker brought the plight of the Afghans to the attention of millions of Americans with her National Geographic cover article. Denker's story of adventure and personal reflection will be of special interest to students of the social customs of Central Asia and to readers who enjoy travel literature in the classic tradition. Highly recommended.
