1.0 out of 5 stars Reactionary Dogma Simulating Cyber-Punk
In the first 30-some pages, we learn that the author hates Environmentalists, social programs, Democrats, Teenagers, Russia, Gays, stem-cell research, New Agers, and of the two secretaries we meet one is a gay (the book uses the 'f' word) and one is black.

Yes, the protagonist is an ex-fundamentalist, but these attidtudes come out in the narration, other...

5.0 out of 5 stars "...some of the best reading fun you can find.", June 29, 1999
This review is from: Sisters of Glass (Paperback)
Beyond mastering a style of writing and story telling that makes you reluctant to leave even for a moment. St John paints a landscape that illustrates a troubling, thought provoking understanding of computer and biotechnology breaking moral boundaries. His writing conveys disturbing images of a not to distant future overcome by technology and greed. Into this future tapestry he drops a novel that starts off on a dead run. Every scene is ripe with conflict, filled with action. Every sentence cut and fashioned leaving the reader with crafted raw elegance. Not just a great read packed with interesting, unforgettable characters. There is a hero, who acts like a hero should. Karl is an ordinary guy with a bad heart, who loves dogs and carries a short barrel shotgun. He finds himself rescuing one of the most beautiful women in the world. Pursued by pure evil through a maze of corporate intrigue set against the mean streets of 21st century Los Angeles. There is no escape leaving the only alternative an ultimate test of character and courage. Bone crunching action rockets you through the pages. It never lets up. You find yourself pulling for the hero from the first page to the last. St John has created a thinking person's action novel. A book with something to say and some of the best reading fun you can find.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very personal story about a man and a woman, June 26, 2011
This review is from: Sisters of Glass (Paperback)
A lot of sci fi is about ideas, or technology, or well... science. Not this one. The science is here all right, but this is a story about a man and a patented life form (read that: woman) meeting in, shall we say, turbulent times. It's about who they are, what they feel and how they view the world. Their views are VERY far apart, it's true, but sometimes that doesn't matter.

Some reviewers have commented that the protagonist, Karl, is not a very nice guy, that he's prejudiced and narrow minded. They're right. He is. If you need to read about characters with PC views, you won't want to read this. But if a protagonist starts out perfect on page one, then how does he grow?

I really felt like I lived these scenes and that's why I read novels, to zip myself into a character's skin and live their life. This was it in spades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Futuristic detective novel., November 14, 2010

Excellent character developement. It is a rescue story, and a tale of survival. Based on this book I read St.John's other two. I like them a lot, but this is my definite favorite. It is a steal at the price! P.S. Eugenics, and the consequences, are fascinating. Are they really people?

5.0 out of 5 stars A possible world where to scape..., May 31, 2011
This review is from: Sisters Of Glass (Kindle Edition)
As this masterly written novel of romance and futuristic images moves forward, the reader realizes that he has entered a real world of intensive conflict and exhausting action, a possible world where to escape to, though perhaps not to the 21st century streets of Los Angeles... "Sisters of Glass" is indeed a page turner, fun producing read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, June 18, 2004
This review is from: Sisters of Glass (Paperback)
This book was a classic SF novel. It gripped me from beginning to end. Absolutely great in terms of philosophical implication, and gives you lots of food for thought.

And to the reviewer, who says they don't know what 'Luddite' and 'recombinant' means: Ever heard of a dictionary? Or better yet, an education? Just because you are too stupid to know basic history (Luddites) and basic science, don't fault the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars PROSE GLASS SHARP! WEAR GLOVES WHEN YOU READ THIS!, July 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sisters of Glass (Paperback)
This novel is almost 400 pages of scene. Intense doesn't even begin to cover it. No filler. No page after page of narrative summary. No symbolism. No artsy fartsy description dragging on for pages to let the writer prove how literary he is.

Every word takes you right there. This is it, take it or leave it. Okay, so there's some jargon in it about the net and DNA, so what? It's a story about some very real people, that's all, even if they do live in the future.

It's about what it means to be human, what it means to be a man. Raymond Chandler might have written it if he had lived to see 2000. He didn't, so it's up to this guy, St.John, (whoever the hell he is) to do it.

It ain't Danielle Steele. I haven't slept in two days reading the damned thing and I still can't get it out of my head.

Read it.

This had the gritty, real feel of a film like Cloverfield or Look. Liked it. At 99 cents it's a good read. I got mine on Smashwords or Apple. I forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the ending I thought, October 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sisters Of Glass (Kindle Edition)
This is not my first review but being detailed and specific would be a "spoiler" to be sure. Suffice to say the book is well written and imaginative. It does jump around a bit and threw me off on more than once toward the end. IMHO, it fell apart. I honestly always knew where I was but not always when I was! The ending was a bit too sappy for me, too pie-in-the-sky. Somewhat anti-climactic. Otherwise it's a great story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, gritty, in your face love story, April 28, 2010
This review is from: Sisters of Glass (Paperback)
Not really about technology as much as it is about two people who crash into each other with every reason to hate each other and despite them all are unable to resist an attraction. Yes, as another reviewer, the protagonist is flawed. Yes, he's un-PC, yes he may offend you. Get over it. This one is written very close to the quick.

I just bought this book because it is from the writer of A Terrible Beauty. If you love a great book this would be it. It is a little hard to get into but a guarenteed hit.
