Book Description

March 13, 2002
Beautiful Anna Lawrence, with a successful career in broadcasting and marriage to a wealthy man with a luxurious country home, has everything a thirty-two year old could wish for. In contrast, her younger sister Becky lives in a dilapidated house in south London, contending with a struggling would-be chef for a husband, an uninspiring job, and a moody eleven-year-old stepdaughter. Yet ever since the sudden death of their father twenty years ago, Anna has been Becky's support, acting as the peace maker in her stormy relationship with their mother, and counselling her through the traumas of a life that has always appeared charmless and problematic in comparison to her own. When Anna unexpectedly falls pregnant and Becky's marriage runs into trouble the pattern of the two sisters' fortunes looks set to continue. The disruption triggered by these events, however, extends beyond their wildest imaginings. The door of the past, sealed for two decades, swings open, exploding their longheld perceptions both of each other and themselves.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'The novel walks a line between comedy and wrenching sadness. It is fluently written and its depiction of domestic chaos and a man's bewilderment when unexpectedly faced with a young son's needs is all too recognisable' - Elizabeth Buchan, The Sunday Times on A Family Man; 'Superb in its minute observation' - Northern Echo on The Lover; 'Witty and engaging' - Family Circle on Single Lives; 'Perceptive and very readable' - The Times on Walls of Glass
