Book Description

July 27, 2010
Umbra and Antumbra are twins. Just by touch, Umbra has the ability to steal good luck from people, while Antumbra has the ability to give bad luck. As long as they're together, their abilities cancel each other out, so neither girl knew about her power until the twins split up to go to different universities. Things started getting ridiculously easy for Umbra, while Antumbra lived the life of an outcast as misfortune befell the people around her. Antumbra can only live a normal life if she's near her sister, but Umbra has been using her power to gain fame and fortune and wants nothing to do with her twin. In fact, Umbra wants Antumbra dead! With the help of a mysterious stranger, Antumbra fights to regain her sister's love and fix the balance of luck in the universe.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Twin sisters Umbra and Antumbra are opposite sides of a painful coin: Umbra steals good luck for herself and Antumbra doles out bad luck, causing violent death for anyone who touches her. They cancel each other out when together, but they’ve been living apart for years. Now, Antumbra’s desperation for a normal life drives her to beg Umbra to allow her to move in, just as two mysterious men begin to use the twins for their own purposes. The thick lines of Chankhamma’s artwork pair nicely with the angst flowing from tortured Antumbra, though curiously the story is drawn entirely in black-and-white even though colors are mentioned as important, both in the appearance of the men and in the swirls of luck emanating from the twins. This compelling and emotional story is marred by some thin explanations (such as the motivations behind the men manipulating the twins) but remains a good selection for larger teen or adult (if unsavory language is an issue) collections. Grades 10-12. --Snow Wildsmith
