Amazon.com Review

These two ceramic cones, one for a chicken and one for a turkey, make an easier and safer alternative to cooking with an actual beer can. The method is the same: liquid is put in a cylinder that goes up inside the bird's cavity, and as the liquid heats during grilling it creates steam that keeps the bird moist. Beer isn't even required-the Sittin' Chicken or Sittin' Turkey cones can hold butter, olive oil, garlic, fruit juice, soda, or chunks of onion, apple or lemon. For extra flavor marinade can be injected into the bird and the outside rubbed with spices. An onion or potato stuffed in the neck opening of the bird helps keep the moisture in. After a couple hours of slow cooking on the grill, the result is a bird crispy on the outside with flavorful and moist meat.

The ceramic cones are designed with wide bases to prevent tipping, and are glazed inside and out to make clean-up a snap-the cones go right into the dishwasher. Spraying a cone with a nonstick vegetable spray before sitting the bird on top will make the job even easier. The underside of the base is unglazed to go directly on a grill. If the cones are used in an oven, a pan of water or sheet of aluminum foil needs to go underneath to catch drips. The Sittin' Chicken measures 5 by 4-1/4 inches, while the Sittin' Turkey measures 6 by 6 inches and can hold a turkey weighing up to 18 pounds. This set with one of each makes a great gift for the outdoor chef. --Ann Bieri

5.0 out of 5 stars You may never go back to the old way, May 30, 2010

This review is from: Sittin' Chicken and Turkey Combo (Lawn & Patio)
I originally purchased just the "Sittin' Chicken" steamer, but after using it the first time I immediately ordered the chicken and turkey combo so I would never be without this option for roasting poultry. If you're going to feed more than two or three hungry people, you will need to roast more than one chicken anyway, so this gives me two chicken and one turkey steamer. The popular method has always been to use a can of beer for this type of cooking, but I like using fruit juices. Apple juice is my favorite. The meat comes out with a moist and sweet flavor, unattainable by other methods. For Easter this year I did a turkey on the grill (we have a wood pellet grill) with pineapple juice and beer in the Sittin' Turkey, and quickly discovered that I will need to make more turkey next year for this crowd. They loved it.

In addition, the ceramic steamers are easy to clean. I rub a little vegetable oil on the outside before cooking to keep crusty bits from sticking, and simply throw them in the dishwasher when I'm done. I don't think I will ever go back to the old way of roasting poultry.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but small and made in China, May 22, 2011

This review is from: Sittin' Chicken and Turkey Combo (Lawn & Patio)
These are a good idea and work well if the bird is small enough. I like the fact that the ceramic stand transfers heat into the center of the bird, helping it cook more evenly and also allows all of the skin to brown.

I used the turkey stand to cook a roaster chicken (7 lbs). Had the chicken been much larger, even the turkey stand would have been too small. I'm not sure what to use the chicken stand for. Maybe a malnourished fryer would fit, or a beefy cornish hen. Certainly nothing that I'd consider to be a respectable turkey could be cooked with this.

I'm somewhat concerned that they are a glazed pottery product made in China. Odds are the glaze contains lead. Also, I'm not sure why the bottom is unglazed since it sits in the bottom of the pan with the juices, but not sure it matters.

This is a pet peeve of mine, may not matter to you: They came with hard-to-remove stickers on the unglazed bottom. I had to waste time scraping with a razor blade and needed goo-off to get all the sticky residue off. Additionally, they both had giant instruction stickers on the main body that were an exact duplicate of the instructions on both the box and the printed instructions included inside. One I was able to get off cleanly, the other I had to resort to scraping and goo-off. Very annoying.

In summary: good idea, work well, a larger size and made in America (or at least not China) would be nice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Well, October 22, 2005

Have only used the smaller chicken base. Chicken came out great. Easy to fill cooker with whatever savory concoction one likes. Imparts nice flavor and moistness to the birds. Easy to clean. Should not have to pay for two Turkey cookers to get two Chicken cookers, though.
