More excellent work!,
This review is from: Sittin in a Tree (Audio CD)
Great guitars (four of them, including pedal steel, plus a banjo), fine production work, same deeply intellectual sense of humor, but different genre? Not exclusively. This CD features JH playing excellent country western with Frank Smith, which btw is a band--not a guy. (Here's hoping "A Beer And A Shot" makes it to the top of the cw charts!) But "Dogs" and "Kitten" are actually classic Juliana Hatfield signature rockers that sound like something off "Only Everything."

Not Bad For 6 Songs,
This review is from: Sittin in a Tree (Audio CD)
This is a major departure for Hatfield, and out of 6 songs, there's only one (Kitten) that I find myself skipping from time to time -- those are good odds. I really like the way she integrated the country feel of the banjo and pedal steel with her fuzzed guitars. The overall tone and feel of the album is great, and my only complaint is that it's so short.
If you like Juliana Hatfield, you'll like this EP.

Almost country or folk sounding,

Not your typical Juliana Hatfield album. If you hate country or folk music then this album could be a disappointment. Otherwise, it's very enjoyable and interesting. Kitten has a sound very different from the other songs. At first I thought If Only We Were Dogs was funny, but as you listen to it the lyrics are a bit thought provoking.

I never really thought I did, but I figured I like Juliana and this was worth a try. It's really good, and nice to see that she's still innovative decades into her career. There is nothing else quite like this cd, and you can't say that about much music anymore.

Holy Cow, where did this come from? Juliana Hatfield never plays this material live and I never saw it publicized anywhere. I just happened upon it. But anyway, I'm totally into it. In fact, I think it's some of the best stuff Juliana Hatfield has ever produced, and I've been following her stuff since like the 80's. I have no idea who Frank Smith is but I suppose he too deserves a shout out. If you like Jules at all this is a must get.

Juliana Hatfield goes in a new direction,

Sittin' in a Tree...
I am a major Hatfield fan. I have all of her stuff, including her work with the Blake Babies. This new cd "Sitting in a Tree" seems to be a bit country-fried, which I have not seen from her before. I know nothing about Frank Smith who is also credited on the album. I will research him. All I can really say is that this is a new direction for Juliana. I am such a fan of hers that I can say, "Bad Juliana Hatfield is better than excellent most anyone else." This is definitely worth a listen, for all of us who love that quirky baby-doll voice of hers.

Juliana Hatfield and Frank Smith -Sittin' In A Tree EP,

Juliana Hatfield continues to create mature music that transports one to another level of thought. Starting with the pedal steel guitar-infused country waltz "364" and ending with the reflective acoustic gem "On Your Mind,"(my personal favorite).
The addition of banjo, as well as pedal steel, to the production is a new twist for her, and adds a nice touch to her inimitable style. |
