Equally at home when playing for white audiences in square-dance bands, when the musicians in the Mississippi Sheiks played the Blues, they became one of the earliest cross-over acts and attracted a huge following in the South. This is southern American music as record companies found it. It's community based and reflects it's entire community. "Progress" would later determine some music to be "black" and some to be "white", apparently for marketing purposes. With our 21st century sensibilities it can be quite a shock to hear fiddle and guitar music with that funk touch and to realize that southern musicians played southern music and "blues singers" were a marketing image created by record companies.
