Book Description

January 18, 1989
A lifesaver for those who earn their living while sitting. Dr. Donkin's book instructs readers how to sit and exercise in order to prevent or alleviate the eye strain, back and neck pain, and shoulder and arm aches common to sedentary people.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Arguing that "millions of people who earn their living while sitting needlessly endure excessive pain, stress and strain during their work and in their lives," Donkin, a chiropractor, has written a survivor's guide for those who "sit on the job." Focusing on such facts of lifeand potential pains in the backas work space (e.g., chairs), office environment (temperature and lighting) and stress (deadlines) that can induce muscle, back and joint discomfort, he considers realistic ways of coping with these problems. Even if you can't refurnish your office, you can probably adjust the seat of your chair, and this alone will improve posture and well-being, writes Donkin. He emphasizes the importance of forming healthy habits in exercise, sleep and nutrition and includes illustrations, an informative introduction to body mechanics and a bibliography.

From Library Journal

One-third of all Americans suffer from backaches, notes the author, a chiropractic industrial consultant, and much of this pain, and resultant health care, workers' comp, fatigue, and stress can be alleviated and prevented. He discusses some of the culprits in the workplace--chairs, work surfaces, lighting, and other equipment that, when arranged and used improperly, can lead to eye strain or neck and back pain--and outlines some exercises and relaxation techniques that can combat these ailments. Appendixes include a lifestyle checklist, nutritional information, and information on the stress-reducing Balans/kneeling chair. Useful for collections with books on occupational health.
