Sitting by the Well
By Marion Woodman

On Sitting by the Well, acclaimed Jungian analyst Marion Woodman uses dreams, symbols, and body imagery to reach into the shadows of the unconscious mind and cast light on our everyday lives. Here is a poetic culmination of Woodman’s many years of work with the psychological impact of patriarchy on men’s and women’s lives – from distorted body image and addiction, to sexual trauma and relationships, to our ultimate connection with the Great Mother: matter, and Great Father: spirit. On six digitally remastered archival recordings, Woodman unravels Carl Jung’s core teachings on archetypes and the unconscious, and analyzes how dreams and metaphors provide powerful healing tools for the psyche. You will hear the evolution of Woodman’s theories over the past decade, while vividly sharing her insights into what we each must do to open to spirit and find meaning in our suffering. For all of us interested in what Marion Woodman calls "the language of our instincts," Sitting by the Well is a one-of-a-kind guide for learning it.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Jungian analyst Woodman's 12 meditation sessions on the well (the unconscious) include a section on how archetypal symbols bring body, soul and spirit into harmony, another on the divine purpose of addiction and one on the "mother, virgin, crone" triad. In this last section, Woodman explains that "virgin" comes second, rather than first, as it would in patriarchal concepts, because the word really has no sexual denotation; it means untouched, as in a virgin forest, uncontaminated and full of possibilities. Woodman brings a sense of immediacy to her meditative delivery, with ad-libbing and long, pregnant pauses for emphasis. Listeners attracted to a blending of Eastern and Western philosophical and religious themes will find that Woodman offers much food for thought. However, Woodman's terrain is no country for neophytes or for listeners who prefer a more straightforward narration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen again and again!, March 23, 2009

Marion Woodman is an exceptional person! I have followed her work for years and was fortunate to be able to see her in person a year ago, and even in her advanced age, she sparkles with vitality! Here is someone worth listening to. In "Sitting by the Well" Marion offers a wealth of wisdom that she has accumulated over years of working with people in therapy and through her own life experience. She is a talented storyteller and compelling speaker.

Marion focuses on helping people make a connection with their soulful selves. She rails at a world that has concretized spirit in the abuse of drugs, alcohol, sex and food; leaving people feeling empty and lonely, more disconnected than ever. Marion advocates honoring and developing both feminine and masculine sides of the personality and comments about the damage that patriarchy has done in the culture becoming too one-sided, leaving the feminine principle to languish.

If you are interested in hearing from an original thinker and a person who "walks her talk" this cd set will not disappoint. ENJOY!

Cindy

'Sitting By the Well' is a must-have guide for men and women alike to cultivate greater inner and outer consciousness both for discerning their own particular life questions and individual myths as well as those in relationship; whether from family, society or the collective. Woodman has many brilliant insights to share for anyone at any point in their lives when they are questioning the surface/tangible appearance of things and strive to probe deeper into the invisible mystery of our being-ness and ongoing 'selving'. As Thich Nhat Hanh would say: You are a living thing, but your ideas about yourself (or anything else for that matter) are not. You are an evolving verb, not a static noun, hence the necessity to constantly interrogate our notions of who and what we are both to self and other. You can find no better companion for clarifying a better dialogue with your soul than Woodman: a real gem!

In my book, Marion Woodman is the quintessential modern day Jungian analyst/writer from the feminine perspective. Her background in literature and drama give life to the concepts she discusses. She has walked her talk and can impart great wisdom in a compelling manner.
