Siwiti is the story of the first year in the life of a killer whale born in the waters off the west coast of Canada. Surrounded and protected by her family, the little orca's life is full of excitement and adventure. Siwiti explores the inlets and channels of the Pacific Northwest. Chasing salmon, playing with harbour seals and Dall porpoises, escaping from aggressive sea lions, Siwiti learns the do's and don't's of undersea life. As curious as any child, she also watches the humans who seem so intent on observing her and her family.

This is the true story of Siwiti, an orca born in the Pacific Northwest. The book tells the story of her life from her birth onward. While reading, one learns about the lifestyle of orcas - hunting, family relationships, and just daily survival. As Siwiti discovers new things, the reader gains an insight along with her into orca life. The book is also full of fabulous photographs of various orcas to illustrate the story. It's simple enough for children to enjoy, yet beautifully told so that adults will love it too.

Well written by someone who knows her whales about actual whales. It has to be fairly unique to have a text by Alexandra Morton who had followed these whales and studied orcas for nearly twenty years when she wrote this book and underwater photos of these very animals taken by her late husband. Her book Listening to Whales describes her life dedicated to whales and her family. Also great reading if you are interested in the Northern Orcas.
