I guess the reviewer below is right: this disc is not stuffed with the anthemic freak-disco of _Cosmic Disco_. But it's very, very well mixed--even for Derrick Carter.

Derrick always mixes in an aggressive and profoundly ambitious style. He spends an enormous amount of time in each of his sets keeping two--sometimes three--records playing, singing back and forth to one another for minutes on end.

He gets incredibly rich textures this way, but every once in a while an errant snare or an ill-timed breakdown on a record mars his symphonies, because he's just going for it so damned hard.

But not on _About Now_. He's locked into a groove here. Even the three-deck mixes are precisely beat-matched and perfectly balanced between all three audio sources. And don't get me started on the EQ shenanigans.

I felt that a technical note is in order to illustrate the tight composition of this mix. The reviewer below, who notes the 'blackness' of this CD, attributes the "black's worth more than gold" couplets to 'Girly Souly' by De Pompidou. If one reads the liner notes, it appears that the VOCALS are an a cappella version of 'More than Gold' on Nite Grooves, while the rhythm track is 'Girly Souly.' The fact that I had to read the liner notes to discover this fact should give readers some hint as to just how well this disc is mixed.

If you know enough about the art of house deejaying to appreciate technique when you hear it, you owe it to yourself to buy this album. It will be in your CD player very often, and for a long time.

The most important aspect of Derrick Carter's new mix "About Now" is that it reminds house fans that this music is very black music. From the "Excerpt from the Autobiography of Ms. Jane Pittman" to the rhyming couplets on "Girly Soully," Carter uses odd, seemingly out of place themes of slavery to evoke a free your (...) from the wall response. At the same time, Mr. Carter seems to be attacking some recent perceptions of dance music. Let's face it, a lot of trance DJs are feeling the backlash of that sorry genre and calling their stuff progressive house all the sudden. Carter has never fronted. He is the essence of house music, plain and simple. Bass is practically absent throughout the first five or six tracks as Carter seeks to showcase the rich, jazzy subtleties of these tunes. Your average Digweed fan may not dig this, but for anyone who appreciates house music as a whole and not only it's most recent incarnations, pick this up. You'll be reminded that house music can be classy.

Acclaimed DJ Derrick Carter has released a fine mix CD which features his love for soulful house. Derrick's beats are hyper and energetic, and the groove never relents from the first track. While some DJs inject techno and European influences into their mixing, Carter's a soul man all the way, featuring some pretty decent vocals, and even a spoken sample from "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," which opens the disc. The mixing is well done, as the tracks blend nicely together, and there are no awkward transitions. It's clear that Carter is a seasoned veteran in the game of house, and it's right "about now" that you should go and get this CD.

Funk the flow and flex your freak, c'mon baby, get on this disco train and bust your kicks because this new disc by Derrick Carter's gonna rock your socks off, kid. It ain't the anthem hits collection that the Mixmag: Cosmic Disco CD was, but it's definitely disco-rockin' enough to bounce, rock, and skate deep-house headz into the afterhours morning bowl. This album is a demonstration of pure skill, jackin' funk, and good politics. The are taken to a whole other level. It's for the house novice and veteran alike. Impressive, Mr. Carter....very impressive.

Years ago a Chicago house legend graced the decks at an underground

venue in Apkujeong. The setting was the basement of the upscale Escada

building down the road from Galleria. A select group of househeads

searched for the mysterious venue and found themselves in the presence

of one the most sought after deejays in the world. Their quest was

rewarded with a five hour set that left the windows steaming and the

dance floor soaked in admiration. Derrick Carter would later comment

that this was one of his favorite parties of that year.

A few years later Carter would return to Seoul to baptize Seoul's

first mega club M2. Once again, Derrick brought clubbers to their

knees with a six hour marathon set that can only be described as

brilliant. Appropriately represented by Most Wanted Djs, Carter has

established himself as one of the premier underground deejays in the

world.

His ability to fuse disco, soul, and jazz into his sets coupled with

his attention to his dance floor makes him a must see. Derrick Carter

will return south of the river to the Garden

Garden has seen some great talent since its opening, but clubbers are

hyped to have Derrick christen the decks with his eclectic beats.

Support will be given by the likes of Beejay, Jinwook, KidB, SunWoo,

and Decode. The lounge will feature UltraDog, JinMoo, and CookieG.

This arsenal of talent for the evening makes the Garden an obvious

choice.

This is my favourite cd at the moment.. have been since i bought it a year ago. what exactly would house be without Derric.. Sure there is alot of "Cool house" producers out there who puke out filter fun disco house all the time. But i think Derric do it with an "American twist" and puts the soulful parts and the soul of US house into this. But this Cd is simply fun and joy to listen to. Kojac tune is briliant, the somore tune is marvelous and derric slams the coolest Paul Johnson tune on ever. Not to mention the funny accapella of palmer browns "More than gold" But its funky the whole way trough. Legendary Carter class!
