Book Description

Forget writing for the thrill of seeing your name in print, or worse yet, for the “exposure.” Freelancers should be paid—and paid well—for their work. If you dream of making a good full-time living or a second income as a freelancer, you need more than writing ability. You need a businesslike mindset, the ability to locate and pitch lucrative markets, efficient work habits, and relationships with people in your industry.

During the author’s first year of fulltime freelancing, she only made $17,000. But by her sixth year, she cracked the six-figure mark. After interviewing dozens of other six-figure freelancers, the author first published Six-Figure Freelancing: The Writer’s Guide to Making More Money in 2005. Now the book’s been revised and updated for its second edition.

Six-Figure Freelancing will show you how to:

• Take a business-like approach to your freelance career;
• Negotiate more writer-friendly contracts with editors and clients;
• Identify lucrative freelance markets;
• Pursue book projects;
• Create your own writing templates;
• Work more efficiently;
• Create and maintain relationships with clients and colleagues;
• Set short- and long-term goals for your writing career;
• Branch into lucrative new freelance areas; and
• Sustain a successful long-term career.

Now, in 2013, even while the economy has tanked and the publishing world has undergone dramatic change, there are plenty of promising opportunities for freelancers. This updated, expanded version of Six-Figure Freelancing includes an entirely new section on markets; advice about using social media and blogging to build your career: more sample queries and templates, and the latest advice from successful six-figure freelancers you can use to sustain a long-term freelance career.

Author Kelly James-Enger has been a fulltime freelancer for more than 16 years; her work has appeared in more than 60 national magazines including Redbook, Self, Runner’s World, Fitness, and Parents. A freelancing expert, she’s the author of books including Dollars and Deadlines: Make Money Writing Articles for Print and Online Markets and Writer For Hire: 101 Secrets to Freelance Success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Freelancing Guide March 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has long stood out on my shelf of freelance writing books. I consider it an "essential" in the genre. As a fan of the first edition, I was thrilled a second, thoroughly researched and updated edition (March 2013) was released. The author shares a fresh perspective on her career and life developments. Her interviews with top freelancers are updated and refreshingly candid. Whenever I pick this book up, I get hooked on the voice and on the author's story of leaving a successful law career for writing and giving up suits and heels for sweatpants and the hum of her Mac. Along the way I got a peek into the world of highly successful writers. Her advice is excellent, and it's realistic--it's not an overnight success story or a get rich quick scheme. No, this book is about hardworking, talented writers thriving in a tough publishing world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless Resource June 19, 2013
Six Figure Freelancing was one of the first books I purchased when I started freelancing and it quickly became my go to guide for freelance advice. Kelly's no nonsense approach to freelancing inspired me to pursue more lucrative assignments with top tier magazines and the practical advice, templates and examples throughout the book taught me how to maintain a profitable writing business. The second edition is even more valuable than the first with added advice on writing for online markets and managing social media -- both musts for successful freelancers.

As a teacher/writing coach, I'm often asked for book recommendations to help writers launch or expand their freelance careers and Six Figure Freelancing is always at the top of the list. It's truly a priceless resource for writers at all levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific guide -- now even better March 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book when the first edition was published a number of years ago. It became a bible of sorts, as Kelly James Enger packed so much practical advice into it. I know I got more and better freelance-writing gigs because of it. Now it's time for a second edition, and the author has come through again, with updated material and sound advice for making it as a well-paid freelancer -- even in the current economy. She doesn't get soft with the reader on anything about this business. It's tough out there. But there is good-paying work to be had, and she will show you how to position yourself to get it. You will be a better business person after reading this book. And that's what it takes to become a Six-Figure Freelancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this book! February 26, 2014
I've read several of Kelly James-Enger's books and they are all top-notch. I find myself quoting her all the time to new writers. This book, in particular, I loan out on a regular basis to folks that want to turn their writing hobby into a career. I also had the opportunity to interview Kelly for an article I was writing, and I can say that her down-to-earth style that you will read in her books is real. Six-Figure Freelancing is my "go-to" for my writing business.

More About the Author

Hi there and thanks for checking out my author page!

As a full-time self-employed freelance writer for 16+ years, several of my books show freelancers how they can develop and maintain successful careers, whether they're new to the business or are more seasoned. (Yeah, that's code for "older.") My latest books include Dollars and Deadlines: Make Money Writing Articles for Print and Online Markets (available on Kindle--print version coming soon); Writer for Hire: 101 Secrets to Freelance Success; and Goodbye Byline, Hello Big Bucks: The Writer's Guide to Making Money Ghostwriting and Coauthoring Books. Today most of my writing work is ghostwriting/coauthoring books for health, fitness, and nutrition professionals. In other words, I get paid to accumulate useless facts that may or may not come in handy if I ever get on Jeopardy.

I'm a novelist too. I write contemporary women's fiction--books about women today, the problems they face, and how they overcome them. I've always been fascinated by relationships, and love writing about them. My newest novel, The Honesty Index, explores the lives of two former "BFF" who are now in their mid-30s and whose lives have grown apart--yet who still need each other more than ever before. My earlier two books, Did you Get the Vibe? (available in print and on Kindle), and White Bikini Panties (available on Kindle) are "chick lit" and are fun, engaging reads. And I like my characters to figure out how to solve their own problems--just like in "real life."

What else should you know? I'm the mom of two little kids who struggles to make time to write fiction; I've lived in the Chicago suburbs (Downers Grove) for fourteen years; and like most women, I'm constantly trying to find that work/life balance. Most days I fail but am having a great time regardless. Thanks for checking out my page, and I hope you enjoy my work!
