Book Description

June 11, 2011
The title is from Damon Runyon's remark, "I long ago came to the conclusion that all life is six to five against." The purpose of this book is to help reveal how all life is indeed six to five against, yet also to try to reveal what makes life tick, especially in the U.S.A. Author Ryan says, “It is a book chock full of events that exemplify or illustrate, and people who personify, Damon Runyon’s philosophical conclusion. I have written about them simply because as a writer – that is, a person who finds out about and then tells about – I could not resist them. I hope that you, the reader, will consider this collection of 103 distinct pieces, many of which have appeared in newspapers or magazines, as a sort of commonplace book. Perhaps you will find it useful as a bedside book -- to be explored now and then, if and when -- or as a reference with a thorough index, or maybe you will be tempted to read it right through from start to finish.”

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

The author has written, ghostwritten, or co-authored 37 published non-fiction books (plus one published novel and one published 104-page children's chapter book). Among them are eight biographies, three books on early childhood education, 10 books on youthful volunteering and career planning, three major reference volumes on courtroom trials (as co-author), seven ghostwritten books on financial planning, three books on advertising and journalism – plus a host of newspaper and magazine pieces. His reminiscence, "A Boy at The Four Corners: Looking into Small-town America in its Prime," has become a favorite among residents of towns and villages. About his novel, "The Poodle at The Poodle," Publishers Weekly said,"This well-made book re-tells the Dr. Faustus legend as it might have played out in American business. The book offers great knowledge of advertising . . . believable dialogue and a good hook." Ryan's biography of the defendant in one of the great courtroom trials of history, "The Poisoned Life of Mrs. Maybrick," has been labeled "a classic" by true-crime critics.
