Meg is back.,

This review is from: Six Geese A-Slaying (Meg Langslow Mysteries) (Hardcover)
"Six Geese A-Slaying" is Donna Andrews' tenth book in the Meg Langslow series. This time Meg has been talked into being Caerphilly County's `Mistress of the Revels' or in other words the person responsible for organizing the Christmas, excuse me, Holiday Parade. Ordinarily Meg would never have accepted the job but when the person asking her to do it is the chairman of the committee that will decide whether or not her professor husband gets tenure, saying yes seems like a good idea. As she stands in her front yard, clip board in hand, directing the arriving floats, bands, animals and handlers and other assorted participants to their staging areas her two biggest worries are the approaching snow storm and getting the Twelve Days of Christmas tableaus lined up in the right order. Her nephew, Eric, is about to hand her an even bigger problem. It seems that someone has killed Santa.
As with all the books in this series, "Six Geese A-Slaying" will keep you snickering, giggling and laughing out loud from beginning to end. You may or may not figure out early on who the killer is, but that doesn't matter. The fun of these books has always been watching Meg deal with the chaos around her while trying to catch the killer. On a scale of 1 to 10 this book is definitely a 8.

Hooray! Donna Andrews is back on form! A really funny book with the Christmas/Holiday parade full of hilarious detail and mad characters.
Only 4 stars because, once again, the murderer was just too obvious from the start (and the plot a straight rehash of an earlier book, too). There are simply not enough alternative suspects and they don't get enough attention to make it a mystery. Also, she made little kids discover the grisly murder scene (why?) without the adults being in the least concerned about their reactions (apparently because they didn't have any). I did find that weirdly distracting, even though this series is so fluffy that the reader just can't take it seriously... It doesn't matter, though, because the pleasure is really all in the merry mayhem that swirls around the weak plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You will probably figure out who the killer is WAY too early in the story. That's the problem with small-town, amateur sleuth mystery series. There's only so many suspects in town, and really, how many murders can there be in one smallish college town. But, if you've liked the other mysteries in the series, you'll like this one, too. Meg and her family are a HOOT. (yes, pun intended!) The series hasn't jumped the shark yet. If you're looking for a read something like Evanovich, give this series a try.

I really loved "Murder With Peacocks", the first Meg Langslow book and I liked the Computer mysteries as well. Unfortunately, I never found the same zip with the rest of the Meg Langslow books as I did the first and when I read "Six Geese A Slaying" I realized that I really didn't care who the murderer was, but just wanted to finish the book. I also knew I would never re-read the book or any of the Meg Langslow books following the first. I, therefore, cleared them out of my collection to give to the library.

As a fairly new Kindle owner, I haven't purchased many new releases for it. In fact, this was just the second one. I was very excited to see a new Meg book available and being able to start reading in a few minutes at lunchtime instead of stopping at the bookstore on the way home was too tempting.
The editing on the Kindle version is pretty pathetic. There are lots of typos and even places where lines in the paragraphs are in the wrong places. This definitely detracted from the reading experience. I really expected to see a better job in a purchased book. Other than that, the story is great. A Meg Christmas - think about it. I spent a lot of time laughing. I will still have to purchase the book itself though.

Andrews has a way of making the most outlandish characters and situations seem both real and endearing. As with all her books, by the time I got through the first couple of chapters, I was hooked and could barely put the book down until I finished it. a million laughs. Even if you are not already a Meg Langslow fan, the backstage look at her wild Holiday parade will delight you.

Twelve Days of Hilarity,
This review is from: Six Geese A-Slaying (Meg Langslow Mysteries) (Hardcover)
I loved this book. I have really enjoyed every book in this series, I think they are the funniest cozy series by far and are still very well-written despite some pretty crazy things happening. As other reviews point out, the highlight of this series is Meg's wonderful family. Every single member of her enormous clan is unique and interesting. They are all accounted for in this book and add the fact that they are all playing various roles in the 12 Days of Christmas Parade, I think this is my favorite Meg book yet. I was thrilled when I saw a holiday Meg book was coming out, especially so soon after the last book, and I was not at all disappointed. Highly recommended.
