John G. Cawelti is a professor of English at the University of Kentucky. He is well known as a pioneering scholar of popular culture and has published many books and articles on popular genres as well as other aspects of American literature and culture. His best-known works are Apostles of the Self-Made Man; The Six-Gun Mystique; Adventure, Mystery, and Romance: The Spy Story; and Leon Forrest: Introductions and Interpretations.

very good introduction to analyzing western frontier culture. he points to other researchers on the subject, most often the famed trilogy from slotkin. this is very digestable and serves as a comprehensive review of the genre. great appendix and sources. good starting point for the fascinating field.
