5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Traditional Reference On Handguns, September 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Six Guns (Hardcover)
Sixguns by Elmer Keith is perhaps the best guide to getting started in shooting, learning how to shoot, and is useful even for old-timers like me who are having trouble with their shooting skills with the one-hand gun. It contains a lot of historical reference material. Last revised in 1955, it is from a kinder and gentler age. It has no Ninja affectations, discusses hunting a lot more than it talks about firing on other human beings (Keith never shot anyone and considered it distasteful). While there is no data on combat shooting here, Keith's remarks on "trick shooting" and "fast shooting" are some of the best remarks on how to operate a handgun quickly, much better than recent reflections on the subject. Keith knew Ed McGivern very well and they were friends -- McGivern was the all time record holder on fast and fancy pistol shooting -- nobody has ever duplicated the things that Keith and McGivern could do with a handgun. So if you're new to shooting, or want the Real Deal by guys who were really there and true Masters, back from the days when men wore and carried guns every day, and used them daily to put meat on the table, Keith's book is the best. Unlike other books on the subject of shooting, Keith is a very clear writer and his voice is one of not only clarity but one of sound reason. This is the one of the all-time best shooting books available, and will remain so until the handgun is no longer used because we've graduated to phasers. Hats off to Elmer Keith. He has left us a valuable legacy in his writing. And, yes, this book will teach you how to use a handgun to defend yourself by teaching you how to shoot well, how to select a handgun and all that. But it doesn't dwell on firing on people. If you can shoot, you can shoot. How you use it is up to you after that.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sixguns by Keith is the one book on handguns you should own, June 5, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Six Guns (Hardcover)
Sixguns by Keith This book is an American classic. If you want a book which tells you all about handguns, this is the book to buy. It is the seminal book about hunting with a handgun. It also contains sectons about selection of a handgun, handloading, trick shooting, long range shooting and the use of handguns as a defensive weapon. This book is a classic. Some might call it dated, as it was written before world war two, and updated by the author in the post world war two era after he gained experience with the .44 magnum in the field. It is the most complete book available on handgun hunting and handguns in general. What it does not contain. This book does not cover recent developments in combat handgunnery or silouette shooting. Nonetheless, it is the best book available on the general subject of handguns and the use of handguns. If you are only going to buy one book on this subject, this is the book to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Keith, October 9, 2009
This review is from: Six Guns (Hardcover)
If you hang on every word of anything Elmer Keith wrote about, as I do, you must get this book. I got the 1961 1st Reprint version (THe one with the western scene with green cover/border) which has an updated suppliment section at the end that covers details about the 44 magnum that was not available in the original 1st edition. If you want to have a good reference that gets you in the mindset to start target shooting or hunting with a revolver, with bookoos of tips and direction, this is the one to get. He put things in terms we can all understand and grasp to master shooting.

Other must haves are, his autobiography(Hell! I was there!), Big Game RIfles and Cartidges,Big Game Hunting, Gun Notes I & II, & Sixguns CArtridges and Loads.
