Book Description

June 1, 2001 10 and up5 and up
Children who are interested in cooking will be delighted to prepare and consume the simple dishes of the 1800s.

This little volume does not profess to be a complete handbook of cookery, and many topics relating to that delightful art are left untouched. The object of this book is to excite such an interest in the pursuit of it as may induce little people of ten or twelve years old to make some playful attempts at a beginning, with the hope that in future years they may be inclined to follow it up in earnest.

This book is the story of a good-hearted lady, Aunt Jane, and a group of young children. You can imagine for yourselves that it was a proud and happy day for the mothers and fathers of our little friends when they had such convincing proof of their children’s progress as was afforded by the excellent supper prepared by then, and that the young people themselves, when they shall put in practice in future years the lessons of that happy time, will always look back with pleasure and gratification to the summer in which they were members of Aunt Jane’s Cooking Class.

Some of the recipes are real treats, like: Stewed Sweetbreads, especially when it is served with Potato Ribbon. A breakfast, like Corned Beef Hash served with South-Side Omelette. On the last day of Aunt Jane’s visit they prepared Jenny’s Doughnuts, Union Park Rice Pudding, North-Side Corn Bread and Coconut Drops. Of course, as in all cookbooks of the time, there are puddings galore, including Rush Street Christmas Pudding, Eve’s Pudding and Our Own Pudding.
