This review is from: Six Modular Pieces (Audio CD)
Beware the extended play! EP's are often ace single plus filler, or holding patterns for artists getting their follow-up songwriting in order. That said, there's the occasional model of consistency, utilizing the 20+ minute form to succinct effect (the best that come to mind are Pavement's Watery, Domestic, all the Belle and Sebastian EP's, and the B-52's early Mesopotamia). For a band like Appliance, the EP affords the space to extend, dabble in instrumental textures. Six Modular Pieces is exactly what it advertises - circular electronic atmospherics reminiscent of Fripp/Eno's No Pussyfooting, early Can, Sonic Youth in its more pastoral moments. Four of six tracks are instrumental; all are lyrical, evocative. "20 Minutes from the East" is a headlong rush towards arrival; "Derailleur, King of the Mountain" a leisurely canyon hike near a mountain stream; "Slow Roller" a steady, cruising steamroller. This Exeter trio is worth keeping an eye on.
