Editorial Reviews

No Depression

Kane has written and played remarkably poignant and precise songs, equal parts pop, bluegrass, and inspiration. Six Months, No Sun is not up to those standards.... Perhaps [it is] intended as a concept album, a Hallmark card to the midlife crisis. Regardless, for the first time in a fine career Kane has lost his touch. The songs are flat and clichéd, and miss the attention to detail that makes his earlier work such a timeless pleasure.

Country Music Magazine

Six Months, No Sun fits the Dead Reckoning credo of individuality. You'll find no "hook" songs, nothing about longnecks or pickup trucks or any of the usual Music Row garbage. Kane never played it safe, and, given the somber mood here, he isn't about to start now.

2.0 out of 5 stars A dull album from an artist capable of better things, May 3, 2000
This review is from: Six Months No Sun (Audio CD)
This album was a major disappointment for me after hearing the superior "Dead Reckoning," Kane's previous album. Other than the witty "You're Just Taking Up Space," there are no songs here up to the level of the previous album. Perhaps the worst track is the utterly pointless cover of "Its a Wonderful World," a strong indication that Kane ran out of musical ideas at some point. Skip this album and go with "Dead Reckoning" instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars A modest masterpiece, January 31, 2000

Kieran Kane doesn't need big words and an impressive instrumental environment. Six months no sun comes to you almost with an apology, 'sorry to disturb you, but I thought maybe you would like to hear me'. But make no mistake. It's a powerful piece of work, from someone who has to say something. At first you say: 'nice', but almost without realizing it you play it over and over again. I reckon it will shine for months and months.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Release, August 11, 2009

This review is from: Six Months,No Sun (Audio CD)
This is a positively excellent choice to add to your collection. There is not a bad cut on the CD and many are such stand-outs that they alone would be worth the price of purchase. Give a listen to "Kill the Demon", "In a Town This Size" or "Hysteria".

Right from the opening song, "Table Top Dancer" until the infectious final cut "J'Aime Faire l'Amour", (you will find yourself signing along whether you speak French or not), Kane takes the listener on a wonderfully varied, captivating and rhythmic journey which nicely showcases his writing style and vocals.

Each release by Kane has its own tone and charms and this title is no different. There is much to like and recommend from this effort. Give a listen to the samples and you'll see. Make the purchase and you'll find yourself coming back to play this again and again.
