Readers follow him as he milks the cows, eats breakfast, and then performs all the chores on his farm before visiting the grave of his recently deceased seventh cat. In an upbeat ending, the man discovers that one of his pets has given birth. Himler is at his artistic best here. Detailed pen-and-ink art shows cats in various poses and activities, and the double-page watercolor illustrations are calming. This gentle story of the circle of life is best suited to one-on-one sharing and ideal for a child who has lost a pet.

Six Is So Much Less Than Seven is a gentle, easy reader picturebook that follows an old farmer and his beloved cats throughout the day. Though the farmer regrets the sad loss of one of his faithful companions, life goes on, and a new litter of kittens is born.
