The authoritative hands-on guide to putting the Six Sigma strategy into practice, written by Mikel Harry, co-founder of the Six Sigma Academy, and Don Linsenmann, the Six Sigma champion who helped to implement Six Sigma across DuPont’s eighteen business divisions.

The ideal companion to Mikel Harry and Richard Schroeder’s national bestseller Six Sigma, THE SIX SIGMA FIELDBOOK takes readers inside the nuts and bolts of implementing the Six Sigma breakthrough strategy, showing readers how companies can streamline their operations, improve the quality of their products and services, and dramatically increase their profits.

Based on DuPont’s multi-year unrolling of Six Sigma throughout the company’s global business divisions, THE SIX SIGMA FIELDBOOK discusses the opportunities, obstacles, and challenges DuPont faced in making the decision to embrace Six Sigma and attempting to adapt it to DuPont’s unique culture. DuPont Six Sigma champion Don Linsenmann reveals the tools DuPont’s managers needed to introduce and sustain Six Sigma quality at every level of the company, from the corner office of the executive boardroom to the factory level. DuPont used Six Sigma to help reshape their entire business model; as a result, they saved billions of dollars. Using as a framework DuPont’s successful multiyear implementation of Six Sigma across its business divisions, THE SIX SIGMA FIELDBOOK reveals the day-to-day obstacles and challenges managers face in coordinating its efforts to implement and sustain Six Sigma and offers a comprehensive road-map on how companies of all kinds can successfully apply Six Sigma methodology to increase profits and improve quality.

WHAT THE BUSINESS WORLD SAYS ABOUT SIX SIGMA

“[Six Sigma] is the most important initiative GE has ever undertaken…it is part of the genetic code of our future leadership.” -- Jack Welch, CEO, GE

“We’ve taken the difficult but basic Six Sigma skill of reducing defects and applied it to every business process, from inventing and commercializing a new product all the way to billing and collections after the product is delivered. Just as we think we’ve generated the last dollar of profit out of a business, we uncover new ways to harvest cash as we reduce cycle times, lower inventories, increase output, and reduce scrap. The results are better and more competitively priced products, more satisfied customers who give us more business, and improved cash flow.” --Larry Bossidy, CEO, AlliedSignal

“The [Six Sigma] Breakthrough Strategy gives new structure to the tools we already had. Structure has been the key element missing in Polaroid’s drive for quality. I keep telling my people that the Breakthrough Strategy cookbook tells us how to use time-tested ingredients in new ways…For us, the results from the Breakthrough Strategy have been quick and powerful.” ---Mike Hart, Black Belt Engineer, Polaroid

“Mikel Harry’s innovation of Breakthrough Strategy has taken quality into America’s boardrooms. While Dr. Deming’s theory of profound knowledge built management awareness and Dr. Juran’s trilogy helped to establish the foundation of a solid quality ‘science,’ Dr. Harry has demonstrated how to make theory become practice at companies like Motorola, ABB, AlliedSignal, and GE.”
-- Gregory Watson, President, American Society for Quality

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Six Sigma Roadmap, June 2, 2006
This review is from: The Six Sigma Fieldbook: How DuPont Successfully Implemented the Six Sigma Breakthrough Management Strategy (Hardcover)
To non-believers, Six Sigma often seems to be a valhalla, inhabited by a mythic warrior caste (Black Belts) who communicate in a language few can devine.

Linsenmann and Harry take the mystery out of a Six Sigma deployment. They give real life examples with real life people to show how Six Sigma transformed the DuPont company.

This book does not dwell on p values or r squared correlation factors. And that is a good thing, since the specific tools of Six Sigma have been addressed in many other forums. Instead, the book addresses the more difficult question of how do you change the culture of a large organization to embrace Six Sigma. It addresses the organizational changes necessary for success and how DuPont in particular made those changes.
