The combination of lively language and delightfully detailed pen-and-ink cartoons with cheerful watercolor washes and textures ensure gleeful moments in story times on numbers (although it doesn't work as a counting book) or sleep or sheep. Its small, square shape may limit the size of group in which it can be shared, but it's sure to amuse individual readers. I have to say, I LOVE this book. My mother read it to me throughout my whole childhood, and it's absolutely my favorite children's book. These sheep have the silliest and most ridiculous ideas of what will get them to sleep, the poor tired things. The book is based on the 's' sound, as you can tell by the title. There's alliteration galore, and wonderfully whimsical depictions of these sheep's silly antics. My daughter and I LOVE the silly ending! Definitely a timeless treasure!
